AZ-COM Maruwa posted a 6.2% increase in revenue to ¥58,698 million for the fiscal first quarter ended June 2026, but operating profit slumped 28.5% to ¥2,194 million, hit by upfront labor costs for new 3PL operations and one-off charges from logistics facility realignment. The company maintained its full-year guidance for a 16.3% rise in operating profit, yet the Q1 figures highlight a period of structural transition.
Highlights
AZ-COM Maruwa reported consolidated revenue of ¥58,698 million (+6.2% YoY), operating profit of ¥2,194 million (-28.5%), ordinary profit of ¥2,025 million (-37.7%), and net income attributable to owners of the parent of ¥1,523 million (-23.8%) for Q1 FY2027, a sharp reversal from the prior year's rapid expansion.
Revenue set a first-quarter record, lifted by higher volumes in e-commerce ambient delivery and cold-food 3PL. However, operating profit fell steeply from ¥3,067 million a year earlier. The main culprits were front-loaded personnel expenses to stabilize newly launched 3PL services and facility realignment costs tied to the full-scale operation of the "AZ-COM Matsubushi EAST" logistics center. These investments are aimed at strengthening the mid-term profit base but weighed on short-term earnings.
Ordinary profit was further hit by a ¥312 million provision for cancellation losses booked as non-operating expenses and higher interest payments. Extraordinary income included a ¥280 million negative goodwill gain from the consolidation of Higuchi Logistics Service Co., but it was not enough to offset the downtrend.
On a positive note, the prior-year quarter saw a 65.3% surge in operating profit, so the Q1 decline partly reflects that tough comparison. Operating profit progress against full-year guidance stood at just 15.9%, but management expressed confidence in achieving annual targets, citing the logistics business's typical second-half weighting.
Segment Performance
Logistics Business: Revenue rose 6.2% to ¥57,900 million, but segment profit plunged 33.2% to ¥2,009 million. Growth was supported by EC ambient delivery (up 11.2% on urgent-order expansion), cold-food 3PL (up 14.4% thanks to new facilities), and pharma/medical 3PL (up 3.9% on full-period drugstore deliveries). EC ambient 3PL volume grew on new contracts with major online retailers, yet revenue inched up only 0.3% as stabilization costs inflated. Last-mile delivery expanded vehicles in new areas but was limited to 4.6% growth due to the transfer of some online-supermarket operations.
The segment profit drop stemmed from higher personnel costs and the facility realignment, especially relocation and integration expenses at AZ-COM Matsubushi EAST. Depreciation also increased year on year.
Other (IT systems, BPO, real estate rental, etc.): Revenue climbed 8.2% to ¥797 million, but segment profit slipped 8.8% to ¥80 million. IT systems saw steady new orders, while BPO start-up hiring costs weighed.
By domain (before inter-segment adjustments), logistics revenue broke down as follows: last-mile ¥9,995 million (+4.6%), EC ambient transport ¥15,834 million (+11.2%), EC ambient 3PL ¥16,833 million (+0.3%), cold-food 3PL ¥8,335 million (+14.4%), and pharma/medical 3PL ¥6,902 million (+3.9%).
| Segment | Revenue | Share | Op. Profit | Op. Margin |

| Logistics Business | ¥57.9B | 99% | ¥2.0B | 3.5% |
| Other | ¥797M | 1% | ¥80M | 10.0% |
Financial Position and Capital Policy
Total assets stood at ¥166,914 million at quarter-end, up ¥11,252 million from the prior fiscal year-end. Current assets grew on higher accounts receivable and cash from newly consolidated entities. Fixed assets increased with the addition of Higuchi Logistics Service (buildings and land) and a rise in long-term deposits of ¥1,811 million.
Liabilities: short-term borrowings surged ¥8,388 million, pushing total current liabilities up ¥10,951 million to ¥44,134 million, likely reflecting funding for M&A and working capital. Non-current liabilities were broadly stable, though deferred tax liabilities edged up. The equity ratio dipped from 40.1% to 36.7%.
Net assets decreased to ¥64,289 million from ¥64,564 million, as dividend payments and a decline in valuation difference on available-for-sale securities offset the quarter's net income. The annual dividend plan remains unchanged at ¥32 per share (¥16 interim, ¥16 year-end). No share buyback was announced.
Cash-flow statements were not prepared, but depreciation rose 48% to ¥1,223 million and goodwill amortization came to ¥104 million, confirming ongoing heavy investment.
Risks and Challenges
Key risks and challenges identified in the financial report and supplementary materials include:
- Cost pressure: Structural industry issues from rising labor costs and stubbornly high fuel prices. Intense wage competition amid driver shortages is likely to keep squeezing margins. The company is pushing digital transformation to save labor, but near-term cost increases are unavoidable.
- M&A-related goodwill and negative goodwill: The purchase of Higuchi Logistics Service generated negative goodwill, but unexpected post-acquisition integration risks or costs could surface. Impairment of goodwill from past acquisitions also warrants attention.
- External uncertainties: Risk of renewed oil-price spikes from Middle East tensions and currency swings. Consumer frugality could slow cargo movements.
- Competition: As e-commerce growth moderates, price competition with major logistics players may intensify. Fierce bidding for 3PL contracts demands rigorous profitability screening at the order stage.
- Full-year forecast downside: Low Q1 progress leaves a heavy second-half reliance. If peak-season demand falls short of unusually robust levels, meeting the annual plan could prove difficult.
Full-Year Outlook
The full-year FY2027 forecast, unchanged from the May 2026 announcement, calls for revenue of ¥250,000 million (+8.4% YoY), operating profit of ¥13,800 million (+16.3%), ordinary profit of ¥14,000 million (+11.7%), and net income of ¥8,300 million (+11.4%).
At the Q1 stage, progress stands at 23.5% for revenue and just 15.9% for operating profit, but the company expects new contracts (especially in EC ambient 3PL) and cold-food 3PL facility effects to contribute fully in the second half, along with cost normalization. The following table compares full-year guidance with prior-year results:
| (¥ million) | FY2026 Actual | FY2027 Forecast | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | 230,663 | 250,000 | +8.4% |
| Operating profit | 11,862 | 13,800 | +16.3% |
| Ordinary profit | 12,537 | 14,000 | +11.7% |
| Net income | 7,452 | 8,300 | +11.4% |
Management maintains its growth trajectory toward the Mid-Term Management Plan 2028 targets.
M&A and Growth Strategy
During the quarter, AZ-COM Maruwa made Higuchi Logistics Service Co. a wholly owned subsidiary, booking a ¥280 million negative goodwill gain as extraordinary income. The acquisition price fell below net assets, resulting in a bargain purchase. Full earnings contribution is expected from Q2 onwards.
Higuchi specializes in cold-food logistics and is expected to generate synergies with the group's existing network. M&A remains a core growth pillar, and the company plans to continue pursuing targets that expand logistics hubs or bring in technology. However, the associated increase in debt raises concerns, and balancing financial health with growth ambitions will be critical.
The Mid-Term Management Plan envisions the group as a "3PL Platform Company," accelerating group-wide digital transformation and labor-saving measures. Short-term costs from facility realignment are denting profits, but whether these investments will become a long-term competitive advantage is the key focus.
Analyst take
The Q1 profit decline was partly a reaction to last year's surge, but record-high revenue confirms a clear growth trajectory, with strong demand in EC ambient delivery and cold-food 3PL. However, the operating margin of 3.7% remains below industry averages, highlighting profitability challenges. While start-up and realignment costs are temporary, failure to absorb them could jeopardize full-year targets. An aggressive M&A strategy is commendable, but the sharp rise in interest-bearing debt warrants caution. Shareholder returns are steady, but balancing growth investments will be key. A second-half earnings recovery is crucial for the stock.
