Key Results
Itochu Enex reported revenue of ¥476.283 billion for April-September 2026, up 15.7% from a year earlier. Profit from operating activities rose 75.8% to ¥19.635 billion, while interim net income attributable to Itochu Enex shareholders climbed 111.4% to ¥14.586 billion. Gains on business sales contributed to the earnings growth, so investors should consider both recurring earnings power and one-off gains.
- Car Life: A one-time gain from the sale of Car Life Stations (CS), steady petroleum product sales and improved earnings at the auto dealership business all contributed.
- Industrial Business: Gains from the sale of an affiliate and operations that capitalized on market conditions boosted profit.
- Improved margins: Gross profit rose to ¥51.316 billion from ¥44.246 billion a year earlier, while selling, general and administrative expenses were broadly flat.
- Equity-method investment income: This increased to ¥2.396 billion from ¥453 million a year earlier, supporting growth in pretax profit.
The company said Japan's economy recovered moderately, underpinned by improving employment and income conditions, while uncertainty persisted over rising prices and the situation in the Middle East. Higher prices for crude oil and LP gas also contributed to revenue growth, which does not necessarily mean sales volumes increased. Gains from the CS and affiliate sales were one-off factors, leaving the sustainability of each business's underlying earnings as a key focus.
Segment Performance
Car Life and Industrial Business were the main drivers of the earnings increase. Power & Utilities, by contrast, recorded only modest profit growth despite a sharp rise in revenue, highlighting differences in revenue and profitability trends across businesses.
| Segment | Revenue growth year on year | Operating profit growth year on year |
|---|---|---|
| Car Life | +6.2% | +156.4% |
| Industrial Business | +47.4% | +82.6% |
| Home Life | +14.4% | Increased to ¥1.213 billion from ¥2.270 billion a year earlier |
| Power & Utilities | +43.3% | +1.5% |
Car Life recorded revenue of ¥307.093 billion and operating profit of ¥7.463 billion. Contributions came from the CS sale gain, steady petroleum product sales and improved earnings at the auto dealership business. However, new and used vehicle sales volumes were below the year-earlier level, and the number of CS sites fell by 22 from the end of the previous fiscal year.
Industrial Business posted revenue of ¥81.574 billion and operating profit of ¥6.175 billion. Higher crude prices lifted selling prices for petroleum products, while gains from the sale of an affiliate and other factors contributed to profit. Demand for asphalt mix declined, but sales volumes of heavy fuel oil for ocean-going vessels increased on term-contract orders.
Home Life generated revenue of ¥34.028 billion and operating profit of ¥1.213 billion. Higher LP gas import prices lifted selling prices, and inventory effects also supported profit. Sales volume was slightly below the year-earlier level, however, and the number of direct-sale customers decreased by about 5,000 from the end of the previous fiscal year.
Power & Utilities reported revenue of ¥53.588 billion and operating profit of ¥4.125 billion. Higher selling prices following a surge in resource prices, as well as new high-voltage power contracts, supported revenue. But rising electricity market prices squeezed retail margins. Retail electricity customers increased by about 21,000 from the end of the previous fiscal year, while the volume of heat sold was below the year-earlier level.
| Segment | Revenue | Share | Operating profit | Operating margin |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Car Life | ¥307.1B | 65% | ¥7.5B | 2.4% |
| Industrial Business | ¥81.6B | 17% | ¥6.2B | 7.6% |
| Home Life | ¥34.0B | 7% | ¥1.2B | 3.6% |
| Power & Utilities | ¥53.6B | 11% | ¥4.1B | 7.7% |
Financial Position and Capital Policy
Total assets stood at ¥442.784 billion at the end of September 2026, down ¥9.906 billion from the end of March 2026. The shareholders' equity ratio rose to 43.5% from 40.2% over the same period, and total equity also increased.
| Item | FY2027 interim period | Comparison with prior-year period or previous fiscal year |
|---|---|---|
| Operating cash flow | ¥12.564 billion | Down from ¥20.942 billion in the year-earlier period |
| Adjusted operating cash flow | ¥24.667 billion | Up ¥6.789 billion year on year |
| Free cash flow | ¥4.236 billion | Down from ¥13.654 billion in the year-earlier period |
| Annual dividend forecast | ¥68 | Up ¥2 from the previous fiscal year's ¥66 |
Operating cash flow fell from a year earlier due in part to changes in working capital, but adjusted operating cash flow, which excludes changes in working capital and other items, increased. In investing activities, the company spent ¥6.004 billion to acquire property, plant and equipment and investment property. It said it would continue to invest with capital efficiency in mind. Net DER was negative 0.07 times, and the company said cash and borrowing facilities gave it funding flexibility for the time being.
The interim dividend rose to ¥34 from ¥31 in the previous fiscal year, and the annual dividend forecast is ¥68, up ¥2 year on year. There was no cash outflow for treasury share purchases and no share buyback announcement. The company aims to reflect earnings growth in shareholder returns while maintaining the financial capacity needed for business investment.
Full-Year Outlook
Itochu Enex had not revised its full-year forecast for FY2027 at the time of its earnings announcement. The company expects profit from operating activities of ¥24.5 billion, up 1.5% year on year, and net income attributable to Itochu Enex shareholders of ¥16.5 billion, up 2.8%.
| Item | Previous forecast | Current forecast | Previous fiscal-year result (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Profit from operating activities (¥ million) | 24,500 | 24,500 | Approx. 24,138 |
| Pretax profit (¥ million) | 26,500 | 26,500 | Approx. 26,006 |
| Net income attributable to Itochu Enex shareholders (¥ million) | 16,500 | 16,500 | Approx. 16,051 |
The previous and current forecasts are unchanged, with no revision to the company's earnings outlook. Prior-year figures are approximate reference values calculated from the year-on-year growth rates provided by the company. Interim profit rose sharply with contributions from business sale gains, but the full-year plan calls for modest growth and does not assume that the first-half one-off gains will recur in the second half. The sustainability of second-half earnings, amid changes in crude oil, LP gas and electricity market prices, will be key to achieving the forecast.
Risks and Challenges
Some of the earnings growth reflects business sales and the effects of energy price movements, and may not be repeated. The company also cited uncertainty in the outlook and significant fluctuations in energy prices.
- Energy price volatility: Changes in crude oil and LP gas prices affect selling prices and inventory valuations. Even if rising prices lift revenue, a reversal in inventory effects or changes in procurement costs could weigh on profit.
- Electricity market prices and margins: Higher electricity market prices squeezed retail margins. Even if sales volumes and customer numbers grow, profit growth may be limited if higher procurement costs cannot be passed on to customers.
- Reliance on one-off sale gains: Gains from the sale of CS sites and an affiliate contributed to this period's earnings growth. The challenge will be to generate underlying earnings across the businesses after these gains have run their course.
- Weakness in demand and sales volumes: Year-on-year declines were seen in petroleum product sales at CS sites, new and used vehicle sales, LP gas sales and demand for asphalt mix. A recovery in volumes, in addition to the effect of higher prices, will bear watching.
- Geopolitical and economic uncertainty: Geopolitical developments, including in the Middle East, and rising prices could affect energy prices and domestic demand. The company cautioned that actual results may differ significantly from its forecasts.

Interim earnings rose sharply, but sale gains contributed to the growth in Car Life and Industrial Business, so the increase alone is not enough to judge the outlook. Steady performance in core operations such as petroleum sales and the rise in adjusted operating cash flow, excluding working capital movements, are encouraging.
One point to watch is that Power & Utilities revenue grew while profit was nearly flat as electricity market prices rose. The ability to restore margins through price pass-through and procurement measures, and to secure recurring earnings to offset the impact of sale gains, are likely to shape the company's ability to meet its full-year forecast.
