Kanadevia's Q1 revenue rose 13% to ¥141.7 billion as its environmental business expanded. Operating loss narrowed to ¥2.4 billion, and net income turned positive at ¥94 million thanks to a subsidiary sale gain. The company kept full-year guidance unchanged and plans a ¥13 dividend hike to ¥38 per share.
Performance Highlights
Revenue rose 13.0% year-on-year to ¥141,745 million, driven by overseas subsidiaries in the Environment segment. Operating loss narrowed to ¥2,407 million from ¥4,055 million a year earlier, and ordinary loss improved to ¥2,915 million from ¥4,731 million. Net income attributable to owners of parent was ¥94 million, reversing a ¥3,632 million loss, primarily due to a ¥4,477 million gain on sale of investment securities from the transfer of subsidiary Vitec in June. Orders received increased, led by Environment, to ¥262,567 million, supporting progress toward full-year forecasts. However, all segments posted operating losses, underscoring ongoing profitability challenges. The seasonal concentration of revenue toward year-end means Q1 losses are typical, but the swing to black relied on one-off gains, highlighting the urgency of structural transformation.
Segment Performance
Kanadevia's operations are grouped into Environment, Machinery & Infrastructure, Decarbonization, and Other. In Q1, the core Environment segment expanded sales while the other segments contracted.
Environment posted sales of ¥121,394 million (+26.3%), accounting for over 85% of total revenue, thanks to overseas project progress. Operating loss was ¥545 million, a slight improvement from a ¥642 million loss, albeit weighed down by rising cost ratios and selling expenses.
Machinery & Infrastructure sales were ¥13,086 million (-2.4%), reflecting the June divestiture of specialty valve subsidiary Vitec. The operating loss shrank sharply to ¥834 million from ¥2,105 million as infrastructure segment losses narrowed.
Decarbonization revenue plunged 58.5% to ¥6,282 million after the deconsolidation of a marine engine subsidiary. The operating loss of ¥826 million improved from ¥1,357 million due to better performance in process equipment.
Other sales increased 20.5% to ¥981 million, but swung to an operating loss of ¥219 million from a ¥62 million profit last year.

Financial Position and Capital Policy
Total assets at quarter-end were ¥676,393 million, down ¥42,246 million from the prior fiscal year-end, mainly due to collection of receivables and repayment of borrowings. Total liabilities decreased by ¥41,052 million to ¥474,187 million. Short- and long-term borrowings fell by approximately ¥47.2 billion, improving the financial base. The equity ratio stood at 29.0% (versus 27.4% at end-FY2026). Cash and deposits were ¥77,647 million, and liquidity remains solid after cash inflows from the investment securities sale.
For shareholder returns, the annual dividend forecast for FY2027 has been raised by ¥13 to ¥38 per share (year-end payment), implying a payout ratio of around 30%. The company aims to balance growth investments under the "Forward 25" medium-term plan with shareholder returns. No specific share buyback has been announced, but improved earnings and cash generation may allow further shareholder return enhancements in the future.
Risks and Challenges
External risks cited include the impact of Middle East geopolitical tensions and financial market volatility. While the economy is on a gradual recovery path, geopolitical risks could affect order intake and material procurement.
Company-specific risks include:
- Seasonality and project execution risk: Revenue concentrates heavily toward fiscal year-end, making Q1 and Q3 operating losses common. Delays or cost overruns could significantly impact full-year results.
- Portfolio restructuring execution risk: The divestiture of Vitec and the solid-state battery business carries potential for temporary earnings swings and unforeseen costs.
- Overreliance on Environment segment: With over 85% of sales from Environment, fluctuations in that segment directly affect consolidated performance. Intensifying competition or technology lag pose additional risks.
- Foreign exchange volatility: High overseas exposure means forex gains/losses affect ordinary profit. A ¥630 million forex loss was recorded in Q1 (vs. ¥1,609 million a year ago), and further yen appreciation could pressure earnings.
Full-Year Outlook
Full-year consolidated forecasts for FY2027 are unchanged: revenue ¥640,000 million (-0.8% vs. prior year), operating profit ¥25,500 million (+109.2%), ordinary profit ¥22,000 million (+61.5%), and net income ¥21,000 million (+88.6%). The company anticipates a substantial profit recovery driven by seasonal concentration of large project completions.
| Item | FY2026 Actual | FY2027 Forecast | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | ¥645,000 | 640,000 | -0.8% |
| Operating Profit | ¥12,200 | 25,500 | +109.2% |
| Ordinary Profit | ¥13,600 | 22,000 | +61.5% |
| Net Income | ¥11,100 | 21,000 | +88.6% |
Management stated that performance is broadly on track, with large-scale projects set to ramp up from Q2. The transfer of the solid-state battery business to Suzuki in July is expected to add an estimated ¥7.4 billion special gain in Q2, providing potential upside to the full-year net income forecast.
Portfolio Restructuring Progress
During and shortly after the quarter, Kanadevia completed the divestment of non-core businesses.
On June 1, all shares of specialty valve subsidiary Vitec were transferred to Kitz, generating a gain of ¥4,477 million. Vitec, a manufacturer of vacuum valves for semiconductors, was sold amid intensifying competition and the need for stable supply under a larger valve maker.
On July 1, the solid-state battery business (AS-LiB® technology) was transferred to Suzuki. The technology, suited for space and extreme environments, required significant investment for mass production of EV batteries, making Suzuki a better owner. This sale is expected to book about ¥7.4 billion in special profit in Q2.
These moves underscore the acceleration of the "Forward 25" plan's selection and concentration strategy, reallocating resources to growth businesses and strengthening the balance sheet.
Analyst take
While the year-on-year narrowing of operating losses is encouraging given Kanadevia's seasonal pattern, the headline net profit was entirely due to a one-time asset sale. The Environment segment delivered robust sales growth but still posted an operating loss, pointing to rigid cost structures. Divesting Vitec and the solid-state battery business aligns with the 'Forward 25' plan but also surrenders future growth optionality. The full-year forecast hinges on a steep Q4 ramp-up, and any disruption from currency shifts or geopolitical events could undermine targets. Tracking order backlogs and quarterly progress against the annual outlook will be crucial.
