Kanematsu reported a 63.8% jump in operating profit to ¥17.4 billion for the first quarter of fiscal 2027, as revenue grew 8.4% to ¥272.2 billion, driven by robust demand in ICT solutions and electronic devices. Net profit attributable to owners of the parent climbed 67.6% to ¥11.7 billion.
Earnings Highlights
Kanematsu achieved strong top- and bottom-line growth in the first quarter, with revenue rising 8.4% year on year to ¥272,167 million. Operating profit surged 63.8% to ¥17,431 million, and pretax profit was up 61.5% at ¥17,190 million. Net profit attributable to owners of the parent jumped 67.6% to ¥11,703 million.
The gains were led by expansion in ICT & Solutions, Electronics & Devices, and Aerospace & Defense segments. The global economy maintained a gradual recovery, but uncertainties over trade policies and Middle East tensions persisted. In Japan, improving employment and personal consumption were offset by inflation and higher financing costs. Kanematsu captured demand in semiconductors, electronic components, and defense-related products.
Earnings per share climbed to ¥70.33 (adjusted for the 2-for-1 stock split in January 2026, from ¥42.02 a year earlier). The equity attributable to owners of the parent rose, pushing the equity ratio to 29.2%, up 0.8 percentage points from the end of March 2026.
Segment Performance
ICT & Solutions
The segment benefited from robust demand for semiconductor-related software and services, as well as IT solutions for education and public sectors. Ongoing digital investment at home and abroad drove revenue and profit significantly above the prior-year period. Revenue increased year on year, and operating profit posted a sharp rise.
Electronics & Devices
Strong sales of electronic equipment, materials, and mobile-related products lifted results. Steady demand for components used in smartphones and data centers pushed both revenue and profit higher. Revenue rose year on year, and operating profit climbed.
Food
Revenue declined due to sluggish handling of some commodities like wheat flour, but higher-margin products in lifestyle goods and feed ingredients boosted profitability. Revenue was down year on year, while operating profit improved.
Steel, Materials & Plant
The plant business performed well, lifting overall segment revenue and profit. Energy and overseas infrastructure projects contributed to growth. Both revenue and operating profit exceeded the year-earlier period.
Aerospace & Defense
Defense-related business expanded sharply, driving significant increases in revenue and operating profit. Growing defense budgets worldwide created business opportunities. Revenue and operating profit both rose markedly.
Others
This segment, which includes logistics and insurance services, saw both revenue and profit decline. Revenue fell year on year, and the operating loss widened.

Financial Position and Capital Policy
Total assets at the end of June 2026 stood at ¥729,438 million, down ¥3.5 billion from end-March 2026, partly due to a decrease in cash and cash equivalents. Interest-bearing debt increased, and net debt (after deducting cash) also rose. However, equity attributable to owners of the parent grew by ¥4.6 billion to ¥213,073 million, lifting the equity ratio to 29.2%.
Cash flow from operating activities turned negative (compared with a positive figure a year earlier), mainly due to higher working capital. Investing cash flows showed outflows for the purchase of property, plant and equipment and acquisitions of subsidiaries. Financing outflows included loan repayments and dividend payments. As a result, the period-end cash balance declined from March 2026.
The full-year dividend forecast for FY2027 is unchanged at ¥70 per share (¥35 interim, ¥35 year-end), which represents a de facto increase from the prior year's ¥63 on a split-adjusted basis (after the 2-for-1 stock split in January 2026).
Risks and Challenges
- Global economic slowdown risk: Trade policy developments and geopolitical risks (e.g., Middle East) could adversely affect transactions and supply chains.
- Commodity price and currency fluctuations: Volatility in raw material prices for plant and steel businesses, as well as sharp exchange-rate movements, may impact earnings.
- China's economic deceleration: Adjustments in China's real estate market and delayed recovery in domestic demand could depress related business demand.
- Domestic inflation and higher financing costs: Rising prices and increased financial burdens could slow IT investment and demand for lifestyle-related goods in Japan.
- Policy dependency of defense-related business: The strong performance in Aerospace & Defense relies on defense policies, introducing variability if policies change.
Full-Year Outlook
Kanematsu left its full-year consolidated forecasts unchanged from the May 9, 2026 announcement.
| FY2027 Forecast | FY2026 Actual | Change | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | ¥1,100,000M | - | +3.0% |
| Operating profit | ¥54,000M | - | +11.0% |
| Net profit | ¥35,000M | - | +7.6% |
First-quarter progress relative to full-year projections reached approximately 24.7% for revenue and 32.3% for operating profit, marking a strong start. While the company has kept its guidance unchanged, the pace suggests room for an upward revision if global conditions and order trends remain favorable.
Full-year EPS is forecast at ¥210.41, and together with the ¥70 dividend, the company offers a solid shareholder return profile.
Analyst take
The first quarter delivered exceptionally strong numbers, with a 63.8% surge in operating profit standing out. ICT & Solutions and Electronics & Devices drove the performance, successfully capturing tailwinds from digitalization and semiconductor demand. While the Food segment saw a revenue decline, it improved profitability, reflecting better portfolio-wide earnings power. The high progress rate against the full-year forecast suggests the company guidance may be conservative. Despite uncertainties in the global economy and currency risks, resilient defense and infrastructure demand create upside potential for the fiscal year.
