Marubeni reported a 20.6% jump in first-quarter revenue to ¥2,609.2 billion for the period ended June 30, 2026, with operating profit soaring 54.7% to ¥132.1 billion, driven by its energy, chemicals and metals businesses. Net profit attributable to owners rose 20.7% to ¥186.4 billion, putting the company on track to reach its full-year forecast of ¥580 billion. Marubeni also announced a ¥100 billion share buyback and increased shareholder returns, as it upsized its investment framework under the GC2027 mid-term plan.
Headline Results
Marubeni delivered strong growth in the first quarter of FY2027, with revenue rising 20.6% year on year to ¥2,609.2 billion and operating profit surging 54.7% to ¥132.1 billion. Gross profit climbed 27.1% to ¥381.0 billion. The Energy & Chemicals segment added ¥32.2 billion to operating profit, while Aerospace & Mobility contributed ¥12.2 billion. Equity-method investment income also rose ¥11.8 billion, boosted by the Metals segment’s copper, coking coal, and aluminum operations. Net profit attributable to company owners reached ¥186.4 billion, up 20.7%. Progress against the full-year net profit target of ¥580 billion stood at 32.1%. In conjunction with the results, Marubeni announced a capital allocation review: the investment framework was increased by ¥250 billion to ¥1.95 trillion, and shareholder return commitments were lifted from ¥700 billion to ¥900 billion.
Segment Performance
Resource and energy businesses powered the top-line expansion. Energy & Chemicals posted revenue of ¥460.4 billion and operating profit of ¥42.7 billion, compared with just ¥10.9 billion a year earlier, driven by petrochemical trading and North American natural gas. The operating margin reached 9.3%. Metals recorded revenue of ¥317.2 billion and operating profit of ¥10.3 billion, but at the parent profit level it generated ¥42.0 billion (up from ¥28.7 billion), catching the tailwind from higher copper, coking coal, and aluminum prices. Power & Infrastructure Services delivered a modest ¥132.6 billion in revenue and ¥0.6 billion operating profit, yet parent profit jumped to ¥29.3 billion (from ¥17.1 billion) thanks to gains on overseas IPP asset sales. Aerospace & Mobility benefited from the full consolidation of DASI and a recovery in aviation, booking revenue of ¥187.4 billion, operating profit of ¥17.0 billion, and parent profit of ¥22.8 billion (from ¥11.5 billion). Food & Agriculture, the largest segment by revenue at ¥1,234.6 billion (47.3% of the total), saw parent profit fall to ¥31.4 billion from ¥35.5 billion, dragged lower by US beef operations and a reversal of coffee futures gains. Finance, Leasing & Real Estate parent profit dropped to ¥17.9 billion from ¥30.9 billion, reflecting the prior year’s North American railcar lease disposal gain. Results in Next Generation Business Development also declined due to the absence of negative goodwill booked a year earlier.

Financial Position and Capital Policy
Total assets at quarter-end stood at ¥10,559.7 billion, up ¥27.9 billion from March 2026, mainly due to higher trade receivables and yen depreciation, partially offset by lower inventories. Net interest-bearing debt increased by ¥191.8 billion to ¥2,050.5 billion, largely reflecting dividend payments of ¥94.2 billion and share repurchases of approximately ¥60.0 billion. Equity attributable to owners of the parent rose ¥98.0 billion to ¥4,461.7 billion, supported by retained earnings accumulation and translation gains from overseas operations. The net DER remained low at 0.46x (0.43x at end-March). Cash flow from operating activities was ¥176.5 billion, while investing activities consumed ¥183.4 billion, resulting in negative free cash flow of ¥6.9 billion. Financing activities provided ¥59.0 billion through bond issuance and borrowings. The company also revised its capital allocation under the GC2027 mid-term plan, increasing the investment framework by ¥250 billion to ¥1.95 trillion and raising the shareholder return pool from ¥700 billion to ¥900 billion. As part of this, Marubeni announced a ¥100 billion share buyback (up to 40 million shares, about 2.5% of outstanding), to be executed from August 4, 2026 to March 31, 2027. The annual dividend was lifted to ¥115.00 per share (interim ¥57.50, year-end ¥57.50), an increase of ¥7.50 from the previous year.
Risks and Challenges
As a general trading company, Marubeni faces several risk factors. Commodity price volatility in copper, coal, crude oil, and grains can materially affect earnings in Metals, Energy, and Food & Agriculture: beef and coffee price swings already impacted Food & Agriculture this quarter. Foreign exchange risk is significant given the high share of overseas earnings: the current quarter benefited from yen weakness, but a strengthening yen would erode profits. Geopolitical and regulatory risks in resource-rich countries, including trade friction and tighter environmental rules, add uncertainty. Investment recovery risk is heightened as the company expands its investment envelope, which could lead to delayed payoffs or impairment charges. Interest rate risk is also a concern: interest-bearing debt totals about ¥1.9 trillion, and rising rates would increase financing costs. Marubeni emphasizes maintaining financial discipline while aiming to maximize basic operating cash flow and investment returns, but the effectiveness of its risk management in a rapidly changing environment will be tested.
Full-Year Outlook
Marubeni left its full-year consolidated net profit forecast unchanged at ¥580 billion, a 6.6% increase from the ¥544.1 billion recorded in FY2026. With first-quarter progress at 32.1%, the company is running slightly ahead of the straight-line pace, though the commodity-dependent nature of its business means the outlook remains sensitive to market conditions. The company does not disclose full-year revenue or operating profit forecasts.
Strategy Spotlight: Capital Allocation Review and Share Buyback
Building on progress under its GC2027 mid-term strategy, Marubeni expanded its investment and capital expenditure framework by ¥250 billion to a total of ¥1.95 trillion. Simultaneously, the shareholder return pool was increased from ¥700 billion to ¥900 billion, with an immediate ¥100 billion share buyback (up to 40 million shares, or about 2.5% of outstanding) to be conducted between August 4, 2026 and March 31, 2027. The company stated it would flexibly use leverage while being mindful of credit ratings, and it does not place a rigid priority on maintaining a post-shareholder-return free cash flow surplus. The emphasis is on balancing high-return investments with enhanced shareholder returns.
