Pilot Corp. posted an 11.2% rise in first-half revenue to ¥72.26 billion, with net income surging 34.5% to ¥10.31 billion. Strong US pen sales and a weaker yen drove the gains, prompting the company to raise its annual forecast and boost shareholder payouts.
Earnings Highlights
Pilot’s consolidated revenue for the first half reached ¥72.26 billion, up 11.2% from a year earlier, marking a record high for the interim period. Domestic sales rose 5.1% to ¥14.72 billion, while overseas sales climbed 12.9% to ¥57.54 billion, underscoring the growing reliance on global markets. Despite a slight dip in gross margin to 53.1% from 53.8%, tighter control of selling, general and administrative expenses (SG&A ratio improved to 33.9% from 35.7%) lifted operating profit 17.8% to ¥13.87 billion. A switch from a currency loss last year to a gain this year helped push ordinary profit up 28.0% to ¥14.87 billion. Net income attributable to owners of the parent jumped 34.5% to ¥10.31 billion. The average dollar-yen rate during the period was around ¥155, compared with ¥150 a year earlier.
Segment Performance
| Segment | Revenue (¥ mn) | YoY Change | Segment Profit (¥ mn) | YoY Change |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Japan | 18,870 | +6.7% | 8,622 | +53.6% |
| Americas | 24,010 | +16.1% | 3,609 | +55.9% |
| Europe | 16,219 | +8.2% | 969 | -6.1% |
| Asia | 13,160 | +13.2% | 701 | -3.1% |
Japan: In Japan, stationery sales drove growth, with the flagship FriXion series, Juice Plus, KIRE-NA highlighters, and Custom fountain pens performing well. Exports of Juice Up pens to South Korea also increased. The toy business declined due to a weak first quarter, but industrial materials benefited from a recovery in semiconductor-related ceramics products. Segment profit surged 53.6% to ¥8.62 billion, aided by currency effects.
Americas: The Americas continued to lead, with the G-2 gel pen maintaining top market share in the U.S. and the FriXion line expanding. Revenue rose 16.1% to ¥24.01 billion, and segment profit jumped 55.9% to ¥3.61 billion, the strongest growth among all regions.
Europe: In Europe, the G-2 and FriXion brands faced headwinds from the fading impact of new product launches and sluggish consumer spending. While revenue grew 8.2% to ¥16.22 billion thanks to the weaker yen, higher selling costs pushed segment profit down 6.1% to ¥969 million.
Asia: Asia saw a 13.2% revenue gain to ¥13.16 billion, driven by the Juice series and fountain pens targeting students in China, despite a sluggish Chinese economy. However, like Europe, increased SG&A expenses caused a 3.1% decline in segment profit to ¥701 million.
| Segment | Revenue | Share | Op. Profit | Op. Margin |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Japan | ¥18.9B | 26% | ¥8.6B | 45.7% |
| Americas | ¥24.0B | 33% | ¥3.6B | 15.0% |

| Asia | ¥13.2B | 18% | ¥701M | 5.3% |
Financial Position and Capital Management
Total assets rose ¥5.62 billion from the previous year-end to ¥185.52 billion. Trade receivables increased by ¥10.27 billion, while cash and deposits fell ¥5.57 billion. Fixed assets grew, and a rise in the market value of investment securities also contributed. Liabilities increased to ¥39.73 billion, driven by short-term borrowings and income taxes payable. Net assets edged down slightly to ¥145.79 billion, but the equity ratio remained high at 78.6%.
Cash flow from operations generated ¥7.28 billion; investing activities used ¥1.86 billion; and financing activities consumed ¥11.59 billion, mainly due to a ¥10.65 billion share buyback in February 2026 that exceeded the initial plan. Pilot also canceled 3.5 million treasury shares in March to enhance capital efficiency. As for shareholder returns, the interim dividend was raised to ¥63 per share from ¥60 a year ago. A 3-for-1 stock split effective July 1 will bring the year-end dividend forecast to ¥24 per share on a post-split basis (equivalent to ¥72 pre-split, implying an annual payout of ¥135), effectively increasing the dividend while boosting liquidity.
Full-Year Guidance
Based on the first-half performance and exchange rate trends, Pilot raised its full-year forecast for fiscal 2026. The company now projects revenue of ¥133.0 billion (up 5.2% from the previous year), operating profit of ¥19.5 billion (up 17.1%), and net income of ¥15.0 billion (up 24.3%). Prior-year figures are estimated based on disclosed growth rates. The company did not disclose the exact magnitude of the revision from the February 2026 forecast, but the strong first-half profit advance was the primary driver.
| Item | New Forecast | FY2025 Actual (Est.) |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | ¥133.0 bn | ¥126.4 bn |
| Operating Profit | ¥19.5 bn | ¥16.6 bn |
| Net Income | ¥15.0 bn | ¥12.0 bn |
While overseas pen demand and a favorable exchange rate are expected to support results in the second half, caution is warranted regarding weak consumption in Europe and China and sudden currency swings.
Strategic Spotlight: Returns and Investment
Shareholder returns took center stage during the half. In addition to the ¥10.65 billion buyback, Pilot continued to invest for growth under its mid-term plan, spending ¥1.82 billion on capital expenditures for new product development and production capacity, and ¥564 million on intangible assets. While R&D spending was not disclosed, the company intends to keep strengthening core technologies like FriXion. The stock split is designed to lower the investment threshold and attract individual investors. These moves align with the 2025-27 mid-term plan’s phase of strengthening the group’s management foundation to adapt to change.
Risks and Challenges
Alongside the strong results, several risks remain:
- Weak European consumer spending: Persistent inflation continues to weigh on demand for writing instruments.
- China slowdown: The sluggish Chinese economy is a drag on Asia segment profit growth.
- Foreign exchange risk: A sharp appreciation of the yen could erode overseas revenue and profits.
- Higher raw material and logistics costs: These remain a potential margin squeeze and require ongoing monitoring.
- Geopolitical uncertainty: Tensions, including in the Middle East, could disrupt supply chains or demand.
Pilot aims to adapt by optimizing regional product strategies and tightening cost controls, but external conditions will be key to achieving full-year targets.
Analyst take
Pilot’s interim results were driven by a weak yen and strong brand power in the U.S., with G-2’s market share and FriXion’s expansion demonstrating competitive advantages beyond currency gains. The deceleration in European and Asian profit momentum is a concern as overseas reliance grows, but overall progress remains in line with the mid-term plan. Aggressive shareholder returns reflect market confidence, and the combination of share cancellation, dividend hike, and stock split underscores a shareholder-friendly approach. The key focus now is whether the yen assumption (likely around ¥155 per dollar) can hold and whether Pilot can mount a recovery in Europe. The penetration of the FriXion brand there will be a litmus test for sustained growth.
