Square Enix reported a sharp jump in fiscal 2027 first-quarter profit, with revenue rising 32.3% to ¥78,423 million and operating profit up 88.6% to ¥17,008 million. Net profit attributable to owners of the parent surged 175.7% to ¥13,244 million, driven by strong HD game sales and a swing from a year-earlier foreign exchange loss to a gain.
Earnings Highlights
Square Enix posted consolidated first-quarter revenue of ¥78,423 million, up 32.3% year on year, operating profit of ¥17,008 million, up 88.6%, ordinary profit of ¥18,766 million, up 172.4%, and net profit attributable to owners of the parent of ¥13,244 million, up 175.7%. The operating margin improved to 21.7% from around 14.5% a year earlier.
The profit surge was driven by strength in Digital Entertainment and a swing from a year-earlier foreign exchange loss of ¥2,147 million to a gain of ¥766 million this quarter. Income tax expense rose to ¥5,601 million from ¥1,991 million, but profit growth more than offset the increase.
Full-year guidance was unchanged from the May 14, 2026 announcement: revenue of ¥298,000 million, operating profit of ¥49,000 million, and net profit of ¥31,000 million. Q1 represents 26.3% of the full-year revenue plan and 34.7% of the operating profit plan, making the second half critical.
Segment Performance
All four reportable segments grew revenue and operating profit year on year. Digital Entertainment, which generated 63.7% of total revenue, reported revenue of ¥49,960 million, up 51.8%, and operating profit of ¥15,583 million, up 91.8%, for a 31.2% operating margin. HD game sales were solid, including the Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows versions of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and other new titles, along with catalog growth. MMO revenue increased as Final Fantasy XIV's latest expansion announcement improved activity, but profit rose only modestly because of upfront development costs for a release expected in early 2027. Smart device and PC browser games contributed higher revenue and profit, helped by Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest Smash Glow.
Amusement revenue rose 3.8% to ¥17,088 million, with operating profit up 7.8% to ¥1,913 million, as existing store sales and prize sales to amusement facilities exceeded year-earlier levels. Publication revenue grew 11.0% to ¥7,261 million and operating profit grew 17.7% to ¥2,509 million, maintaining a 34.6% operating margin on strong comic sales. Merchandising revenue grew 22.3% to ¥4,611 million, with operating profit up 28.7% to ¥1,559 million, helped by new character goods for major IP.
| Segment | Revenue | Share | Op. Profit | Op. Margin |

| Digital Entertainment | ¥50.0B | 64% | ¥15.6B | 31.2% |
| Amusement | ¥17.1B | 22% | ¥1.9B | 11.2% |

| Merchandising | ¥4.6B | 6% | ¥1.6B | 33.8% |
Financial Position and Capital Policy
Total assets at the end of the quarter were ¥430,751 million, down ¥7,267 million from ¥438,018 million at the end of the prior fiscal year. Within current assets, cash and deposits declined ¥16,362 million, while notes and accounts receivable rose ¥5,330 million and content production accounts rose ¥4,110 million. Fixed assets stood at ¥67,418 million, down ¥2,205 million from year-end.
Total liabilities declined ¥12,757 million to ¥76,036 million, mainly due to a ¥12,101 million drop in income taxes payable and a ¥3,540 million decline in bonus provisions, partly offset by a ¥2,099 million increase in notes and accounts payable. Net assets rose to ¥354,714 million, and the equity ratio improved to 82.2% from 79.6% at the end of the prior fiscal year, underscoring a strong balance sheet.
The annual dividend forecast for fiscal 2027 is ¥43.00 per share on a post-split basis, unchanged from the prior fiscal year's ¥43.00. The company plans an interim dividend of ¥18.00 and a year-end dividend of ¥25.00. No share buyback was announced; treasury stock was ¥7,072 million, slightly lower than at year-end, keeping shareholder returns centered on dividends.
Risks and Challenges
Square Enix cautioned that forward-looking projections may differ materially due to factors such as game development delays, changes in market preferences, intensifying competition, weak sales of major titles, currency fluctuations, and regulatory changes. In MMO, development costs for Final Fantasy XIV's expansion package are being incurred ahead of its release, and whether the revenue contribution materializes as planned after launch remains a key challenge. The company also has a structurally high dependence on hit HD games, so the timing and success of large title releases will continue to have a significant impact on results.
Full-Year Outlook
Full-year consolidated guidance for fiscal 2027 is unchanged from the May 14, 2026 disclosure. Revenue is forecast at ¥298,000 million, up 0.1% from the prior year; operating profit at ¥49,000 million, down 10.5%; and net profit attributable to owners of the parent at ¥31,000 million, up 4.7%. The expected year-on-year operating profit decline largely reflects concentrated development and marketing spending on major titles scheduled for the second half. Q1 was strong, but heavier cost burdens in the second half are expected to push full-year operating profit lower.
| Item | Previous forecast | Current forecast | Prior-year result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | ¥298,000 million | ¥298,000 million | ¥297,700 million |
| Operating profit | ¥49,000 million | ¥49,000 million | ¥54,800 million |
| Net profit | ¥31,000 million | ¥31,000 million | ¥29,600 million |
Prior-year figures are for fiscal 2026 (approximate). The company does not disclose a cumulative second-quarter forecast.
Analyst take
Square Enix's first quarter showed a sharp profit expansion, partly due to a swing from a year-earlier FX loss to a gain, but underlying business growth was also solid. Digital Entertainment's operating margin reached 31.2%, supported by the Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and expectations for a new MMO expansion. The main concern is the full-year operating profit decline forecast, driven by concentrated development and marketing costs for second-half titles. With an equity ratio above 82% and a maintained dividend, long-term investors have some reassurance; the next focal points are new HD game IP creation and stabilizing smartphone game earnings.
