Takeda reported that the US Food and Drug Administration has accepted its new drug application for the psoriasis treatment zasocitinib. The approval target date is set for the first quarter of 2027 following the priority review status.
The application is based on comprehensive data from Phase 3 trials LATITUDE PsO 3001 and 3002 involving approximately 3,000 patients. About 70% of participants achieved complete or near-complete skin clearance (sPGA 0/1) at week 16, significantly outperforming placebo groups which showed only 11-13% clearance rates. This result also surpasses the efficacy observed with apremilast.
The drug demonstrated high effectiveness in hard-to-treat areas such as the scalp, nails, and palms and soles. Scalp lesion clearance rates reached 74-77% for sPGA 0/1, suggesting rapid and sustained benefits for treatment-resistant cases. The safety profile remains favorable with no new safety signals, confirming the balance of high selectivity and tolerance expected from a next-generation TYK2 inhibitor.
With once-daily oral administration improving quality of life, zasocitinib is positioned to meet the unmet needs of an estimated 66.4 million global psoriasis patients.
The FDA accepted the application as a priority review item, allowing for a shorter evaluation period than standard processes. The prescription drug user fee act (PDUFA) target date for completion is the first quarter of 2027 (January to March). The European Medicines Agency has also accepted the marketing authorization application, accelerating global approval efforts.
Takeda stated that this NDA will not significantly impact its full-year consolidated financial projections for the fiscal year ending March 2027. This indicates that immediate profits may not be directly affected by commercialization time lags, highlighting a long-term perspective on growth engines starting from 2028.
Compared to other JAK inhibitors, zasocitinib exhibits over one million times greater selectivity for TYK2, minimizing effects on JAK1/2/3. This mechanism potentially avoids cardiovascular and blood disorder risks associated with traditional JAK inhibitors. Clinical trials are also underway to expand indications to psoriatic arthritis and inflammatory bowel diseases.
Analyst take
This disclosure represents a strategic turning point rather than just a new product addition. The clinical data shows clear superiority over existing standards, while priority review may accelerate the approval timeline. Investors should look beyond short-term stock reactions to evaluate the potential for market penetration and value chain expansion into inflammatory bowel diseases.
