GMO: Buyback ends near ¥30bn cap after October purchases
GMO ended a buyback authorized in June 2026, purchasing 2,800,100 common shares for ¥10.118 billion from Oct. 1 to 29. Cumulative spending nearly reached the ¥30 billion cap, while its long-term share acquisition and cancellation program will continue.

Spending nearly reaches authorized cap
GMO completed its share repurchase on Oct. 29. The resolution set the following limits, alongside cumulative results:
- Share limit: 16 million shares, equal to 16.32% of issued shares excluding treasury shares
- Purchase price cap: ¥30 billion. Cumulative spending was ¥29,999,716,700
- Method: Market purchases on the Tokyo Stock Exchange
Cumulative shares acquired remained below the limit, while spending came close to the cap. The buyback ended before the resolution period expired, with the monetary allocation effectively used up.
Acquisitions and cancellations to continue toward long-term goal
GMO has made the acquisition and cancellation of shares it issued in the past part of its long-term shareholder return policy. It plans to continue pursuing its long-term acquisition and cancellation goals.
- Acquisition progress: About 28.62 million shares acquired toward a target of about 38.35 million, a 74.6% completion rate
- Cancellation progress: About 10.45 million shares canceled, a 27.3% completion rate
The end of this buyback does not mean the broader long-term goals have been completed. Acquisitions and cancellations remain at different stages, making the treatment of repurchased shares another point to watch in GMO’s future shareholder returns.

The ¥30 billion authorization appears to have been constrained by the spending cap rather than the 16 million-share limit: cumulative purchases were about ¥29.9997 billion, while the number of shares acquired remained below half the ceiling. Under the long-term program, acquisition progress stands at 74.6% and cancellation progress at 27.3%. Investors will be watching how GMO handles repurchased shares, including whether they are canceled, as it pursues its shareholder return goals.
