DNP reported Q1 FY2027 revenue of ¥372.9 billion (+1.9% YoY) and operating profit of ¥27.9 billion (+21.3%), driven by semiconductor and healthcare growth. Net profit halved to ¥23.6 billion (-48.0%) due to absence of a year-ago ¥37.2 billion securities gain.
Earnings Highlights
DNP posted higher revenue and operating profit for the April-June quarter, with revenue reaching ¥372,946 million (up 1.9% year on year) and operating profit rising to ¥27,876 million (up 21.3%). Ordinary profit increased 25.0% to ¥35,274 million. However, net profit attributable to owners of the parent dropped 48.0% to ¥23,576 million, as the previous year included a ¥37.2 billion gain from sale of investment securities.
The strong operating performance was powered by the Electronics segment, where semiconductor photomasks and OLED metal masks saw robust demand, and by the Life & Healthcare segment, which benefited from structural reforms and firm sales of industrial materials. In contrast, the Smart Communication segment suffered from a shrinking paper media market and lower IC card sales. Under its three-year mid-term plan (FY2026-2028), DNP aims to accelerate growth investments and structural transformation, leveraging advanced technologies including generative AI.
Segment Performance
Smart Communication reported revenue of ¥173,938 million (down 1.4% YoY) and operating profit of ¥5,179 million (down 13.9%). Imaging communication materials and photo services were firm, but the decline in dual-interface IC card sales and the shrinking paper media market in marketing and publishing weighed on results. Business process outsourcing remained steady, partially offsetting the decline.
Life & Healthcare posted revenue of ¥127,676 million (up 0.5% YoY) and operating profit of ¥11,580 million (up 21.8%). Industrial functional materials benefited from strong solar cell encapsulants and production line upgrades, though lithium-ion battery pouch demand softened. Packaging passed on higher raw material costs, and beverage sales grew on price revisions and vending machine expansion. Medical packaging and pharmaceuticals also performed well, lifting segment margins.
Electronics led growth with revenue of ¥71,331 million (up 12.4% YoY) and operating profit of ¥17,899 million (up 28.2%). Display optical films gained from wider production lines for larger LCD panels, while OLED metal masks for high-end applications increased. Semiconductor photomasks were strong across both advanced nodes and volume zones, with continued investment in EUV lithography and nanoimprint technologies.
| Segment | Revenue | Share | Op. Profit | Op. Margin |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Smart Communication | ¥173.9B | 47% | ¥5.2B | 3.0% |
| Life & Healthcare | ¥127.7B | 34% | ¥11.6B | 9.1% |
| Electronics | ¥71.3B | 19% | ¥17.9B | 25.1% |
Financial Position and Capital Policy
Total assets at end-June 2026 stood at ¥2,080,181 million, up ¥46,071 million from March 2026, mainly due to an increase in securities. Net assets rose ¥40,778 million to ¥1,307,884 million, lifting the equity ratio to 59.1% (from 58.5%). Cash and deposits decreased.
For FY2027, DNP plans an annual dividend of ¥41 per share, an increase of ¥1 from the previous year (interim ¥19, year-end ¥22). During the quarter, the company carried out ¥7.26 billion in share buybacks, aligning with its policy of balancing growth investment and shareholder returns.
Risks and Challenges
Key risks cited in the earnings report include:
- Geopolitical uncertainties (e.g., Middle East) and policy changes affecting economic conditions
- Fluctuations in raw material, labor, and general price levels
- Growing pressure to address environmental and human rights issues
- Persistent contraction of the paper media market (especially in publishing and marketing)
- Semiconductor supply chain volatility, including memory shortages
To address these, DNP is accelerating its portfolio shift. It is increasing investment in semiconductor and healthcare growth areas while moving away from paper toward digital and high-performance materials. The acquisition of AUSTRIACARD HOLDINGS AG (announced May 2026), which provides payment IC cards and national ID solutions in Europe, Africa, and North America, is a strategic move to strengthen global competitiveness and diversify risk in the information security business.
Full-Year Outlook
Full-year forecasts for FY2027, unchanged from the May 13, 2026 announcement, project:
- Revenue: ¥1,530,000 million (+1.2% vs. FY2026)
- Operating profit: ¥108,000 million (+6.9%)
- Ordinary profit: ¥124,000 million (+4.0%)
- Net profit: ¥95,000 million (-8.6%)
The net profit decline reflects the absence of the prior year’s extraordinary gain. First-quarter progress was 24.4% of the full-year revenue target and 25.8% of the operating profit target, indicating a solid start. However, risks from yen appreciation and higher material costs may intensify in the second half.
Strategic Topics
Several growth initiatives were announced or executed during the quarter:
- Global expansion of information security: The tender offer for AUSTRIACARD HOLDINGS AG (May 2026) will complement the July 2025 acquisition of Rubicon SEZC, expanding DNP's share in global payment and identity solutions markets.
- Publishing content overseas: A joint venture with Kodansha and IJ Kakehashi Services established Kodansha India Private Limited (July 2026) to manufacture and publish manga tailored to the Indian market. DNP also launched "AN-IPPON," a North American brand fusing Japanese anime IP with craft products, targeting high-value merchandise sales.
These moves embody the mid-term plan’s emphasis on proactive investment in focus businesses and new value creation, leveraging printing and IT expertise for cross-industry partnerships and overseas growth.
Analyst take
DNP’s first quarter shows a steady improvement in underlying earnings power. While net profit was halved by the lap of a large year-ago securities gain, the 21% jump in operating profit is encouraging. The Electronics segment’s 25% margin is particularly striking, reflecting strong demand for semiconductor photomasks. The Smart Communication decline underscores the urgency of portfolio transformation: the AUSTRIACARD acquisition and other moves are critical. The ¥1 dividend hike and buybacks signal shareholder-friendly intent, though ROE improvement from a ¥1.3 trillion equity base remains a work in progress. Execution of the mid-term plan is off to a good start, but currency and cost headwinds in H2 will test the full-year outlook.
