Fujifilm Q1 FY2027 revenue rose 10.3% to ¥826.5 billion, but operating profit slumped 32.0% to ¥51.2 billion. Net income dropped 30.4% to ¥37.4 billion. Full-year sales guidance was raised to ¥3,560 billion.
Performance Highlights
Fujifilm reported consolidated revenue of ¥826.5 billion for the first quarter of FY2027 (April-June 2026), up 10.3% year on year. Overseas sales accounted for 69.3% of the total, and the weak yen (averaging ¥159 to the dollar, ¥185 to the euro) provided a tailwind. Operating profit, however, plunged 32.0% to ¥51.2 billion. Pretax profit declined 27.6% to ¥52.1 billion, and net profit attributable to shareholders fell 30.4% to ¥37.4 billion. The profit erosion stemmed chiefly from increased fixed costs following the ramp-up of large-scale bio CDMO facilities in Healthcare, temporary expenses for structural reforms in Business Innovation, and higher raw material costs across the group. On the positive side, Electronics posted an operating profit of ¥31.1 billion (+38.2%), a record high, as AI-driven semiconductor demand lifted advanced materials. Imaging also delivered steady gains, with operating profit of ¥43.4 billion (+3.9%).
Segment Performance
Segment results for Q1 FY2027 were as follows:
| Segment | Revenue (¥bn) | YoY | Operating Profit (¥bn) | YoY | Margin |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Healthcare | 256.8 | +12.4% | -12.7 | Red | -4.9% |
| Electronics | 127.7 | +25.0% | 31.1 | +38.2% | 24.4% |
| Business Innovation | 273.2 | -0.1% | -1.4 | Red | -0.5% |
| Imaging | 168.8 | +16.2% | 43.4 | +3.9% | 25.7% |
Healthcare revenue expanded 12.4% to ¥256.8 billion, aided by strong medical systems (endoscopy, ultrasound) in major markets, the launch of cloud-based "SYNAPSE" medical IT, and progress in life sciences (media, iPS cell products like "iCell"). However, the segment swung to an operating loss of ¥12.7 billion due to heavy fixed costs at the bio CDMO unit. The subsidiary also obtained manufacturing and marketing approval for the regenerative medicine product "Sevisca® Injection", a future growth driver.
Electronics was the standout performer, with revenue soaring 25.0% to ¥127.7 billion and operating profit surging 38.2% to ¥31.1 billion. AI semiconductor demand fueled sales of advanced materials (CMP slurries, NTI developers, leading-edge photoresists) to major global foundries and chipmakers. Liquid polyimide for advanced packaging also grew, and data-tape-based archiving materials saw increased IT demand. Electronics materials achieved record-high operating profit, well outpacing market growth.
Business Innovation revenue edged down 0.1% to ¥273.2 billion, and the segment recorded an operating loss of ¥1.4 billion. Office solutions exports to Europe, the US, and China declined, and BPO services faced a pullback from the prior year's special demand. Strong sales of overseas core-system deployment support and graphic-communication inkjet heads provided some offset. The company opened a hub for its "REiLI Business" AI technology brand in Yokohama Minato Mirai, accelerating structural reforms. Temporary costs for strengthening the business weighed on the segment's bottom line.
Imaging posted a robust performance, with revenue up 16.2% to ¥168.8 billion and operating profit up 3.9% to ¥43.4 billion. The consumer "instax" series, especially mid-to-high-end models, and the newly launched "instax mini 13" drove global sales. Digital cameras like the "X-E5" and "X100VI" remained popular, particularly in Asia. The segment's operating margin was a healthy 25.7%, and entertainment imaging has become a stable pillar of profit.
| Segment | Revenue | Share | Op. Profit | Op. Margin |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Healthcare | ¥256.8B | 31% | ¥-12.7B | -4.9% |
| Electronics | ¥127.7B | 15% | ¥31.1B | 24.4% |
| Business Innovation | ¥273.2B | 33% | ¥-1.4B | -0.5% |
| Imaging | ¥168.8B | 20% | ¥43.4B | 25.7% |
Financial Position and Capital Policy
Total assets at quarter-end stood at ¥6,167.3 billion, up ¥113.5 billion from the previous fiscal year-end, largely reflecting an ¥88.6 billion increase in tangible fixed assets from ongoing capital investment. Liabilities rose ¥54.4 billion to ¥2,263.8 billion, primarily due to higher interest-bearing debt. Shareholders' equity grew ¥58.9 billion to ¥3,898.5 billion, keeping the equity ratio at a strong 63.2% (down 0.2 pt from March 2026).
Cash flow from operating activities was a ¥92.3 billion inflow (a decrease of ¥2.5 billion YoY). Investing activities consumed ¥124.9 billion, mainly for capex, resulting in negative free cash flow of -¥32.6 billion. Financing activities brought in a net ¥6.3 billion from long-term borrowings, while ¥30.0 billion was spent on treasury share buybacks. Cash and cash equivalents ended at ¥150.7 billion, down ¥19.9 billion from the prior year-end but considered sufficient.
For the full year ending March 2027, Fujifilm plans an increased dividend of ¥75 per share (versus ¥70 in FY2026), with an interim payment of ¥37.5 and a year-end ¥37.5. Shareholder returns are being enhanced through both higher dividends and ongoing share repurchases.
Risks and Challenges
Key risk factors highlighted in the earnings report include:
- Delayed profitability in bio CDMO: While revenue is growing as large-scale facilities ramp up, fixed costs are front-loaded, and achieving break-even may take time.
- Rising semiconductor memory prices: This could increase costs for the Electronics segment and pressure full-year profits.
- Higher raw material and energy costs: These elevated the cost of sales across the board, pushing the operating margin down from 10.0% a year ago to 6.2%.
- Currency volatility: A weak yen lifts revenue but also raises import costs and affects overseas subsidiaries. Full-year assumptions have been set at ¥156 per dollar and ¥181 per euro.
- Geopolitical risks and trade friction: Export restrictions related to semiconductors and potential headwinds in the Chinese market could impact Electronics sales.
- Intensifying competition: Differentiation in digital cameras and healthcare equipment remains critical.
Management aims to restore earnings power by strengthening advanced materials in Electronics and transforming the Healthcare portfolio, but the transitional profit decline is a near-term concern.
Full-Year Outlook
Fujifilm raised its full-year revenue forecast by ¥90 billion to ¥3,560 billion (up 6.0% from FY2026), citing robust sales of semiconductor materials and imaging products, along with revised forex assumptions (dollar: 150→156 yen, euro: 175→181 yen). Operating profit and net profit forecasts were unchanged at ¥365 billion (+4.2%) and ¥280 billion, respectively. Cost headwinds such as slower bio CDMO ramp-up and memory price increases are expected to be offset by higher Electronics sales and gains on non-core asset disposals.
| Item | Previous (May 12) | Revised | FY2026 Actual |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | ¥3,470.0 bn | ¥3,560.0 bn | ¥3,357.0 bn |
| Operating profit | ¥365.0 bn | ¥365.0 bn | ¥350.2 bn |
| Net profit | ¥280.0 bn | ¥280.0 bn | ¥276.7 bn |
| Assumed forex ($/¥) | ¥150 | ¥156 | ¥151 |
| Assumed forex (€/¥) | ¥175 | ¥181 | ¥175 |
The upward revision to revenue without a corresponding lift in profit suggests that while the risk of a full-year operating profit decline has diminished, a strong profit growth scenario has not yet materialized.
R&D and Growth Investments
R&D expenses in Q1 rose 4.1% to ¥42.3 billion, while capital expenditure declined 14.8% to ¥111.2 billion. Investment remained concentrated on growth areas:
- Healthcare: Capex ¥82.9 billion (down 24.0%), R&D ¥13.8 billion (down 6.8%). Spending focused on bio CDMO sites, iPS cell facilities, and development of new endoscopy and ultrasound products.
- Electronics: R&D ¥8.1 billion (up 15.1%), capex ¥5.9 billion (up 17.1%). Priorities include accelerating development of AI‑chip‑related advanced materials and environmentally friendly products like the PFAS‑free insulating film "ZEMATES".
