Furukawa Electric reported a 24.3% jump in first-quarter revenue to ¥365.2 billion and operating profit more than tripled to ¥25.5 billion, driven by surging data center demand. Net profit soared to ¥22.2 billion, and the company raised its full-year guidance.
First-Quarter Highlights
Furukawa Electric reported record quarterly results, with revenue of ¥365,221 million (up 24.3% year-on-year), operating profit of ¥25,457 million (up 205.4%), ordinary profit of ¥30,953 million (up 304.0%), and net income of ¥22,229 million (up 335.0%). Data center demand for optical transmission components and communication cables was the primary growth engine. The company also lifted its full-year outlook, citing continued order strength.
Segment Performance
Furukawa Electric reorganized its business segments this fiscal year to strengthen its data center-related operations. First-quarter results by segment are as follows:
Optical Solutions
Revenue of ¥60.0 billion (up 45.6%) and operating profit of ¥9.2 billion (versus a ¥0.7 billion loss a year earlier). Demand for optical fiber components and transmission equipment for data centers exploded, driving a swing to profitability. Production capacity expansions also improved gross margins.
Information Components
Revenue of ¥59.6 billion (up 32.8%) and operating profit of ¥7.4 billion (up 105.2%). High-speed communication cables and connectors for hyperscale data centers performed strongly, with gains in both volume and pricing. Price hikes implemented in the prior year took hold, boosting margins.
Energy Infrastructure
Revenue of ¥36.0 billion (up 9.7%) and operating profit of ¥3.0 billion (up 220.7%). Solid demand for underground and functional cables in Japan, along with profit improvement from the deconsolidation of a Chinese subsidiary, lifted earnings. Power cables for renewable energy also grew.
Automotive Electronics Systems
Revenue of ¥92.0 billion (up 10.9%) and operating profit of ¥6.4 billion (up 20.9%). Steady vehicle production in Japan and North America supported sales of wiring harnesses and electrical components. Cost reductions and efficiency gains further padded profits.
Metal Solutions
Revenue of ¥121.7 billion (up 55.0%) and operating profit of ¥0.8 billion (down 2.1%). Surging copper prices and a weaker yen boosted revenue, but higher raw material costs weighed on margins. While supply-demand conditions were firm, spread management remained challenging.
Services, Development & Others
Revenue of ¥11.3 billion (down 60.0%) and an operating loss of ¥1.1 billion (an improvement of ¥0.3 billion year-on-year). This segment mainly includes hydroelectric power and R&D support. The revenue drop reflected the completion of a large prior-year project, though the loss narrowed.
| Segment | Revenue | Share | Op. Profit | Op. Margin |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Optical Solutions | ¥59.0B | 16% | ¥9.2B | 15.5% |
| Information Components | ¥55.7B | 15% | ¥7.4B | 13.3% |
| Energy Infrastructure | ¥34.9B | 10% | ¥3.0B | 8.6% |
| Automotive Electronics Systems | ¥91.4B | 25% | ¥6.4B | 7.0% |
| Metal Solutions | ¥114.8B | 31% | ¥770M | 0.7% |
| Services, Development & Others | ¥9.4B | 3% | ¥-1.1B | -12.0% |
Financial Position and Capital Policy
Total assets stood at ¥1,131,296 million at quarter-end, up ¥64.9 billion from the prior fiscal year-end, driven by increases in accounts receivable, inventories, and mark-to-market gains on investment securities. Liabilities rose ¥45.2 billion to ¥676,349 million, reflecting higher notes payable, trade payables, borrowings, and commercial paper. Net assets grew to ¥454,946 million, with an equity ratio of 38.6% (down 0.5 percentage points from the previous year-end), remaining healthy.
The company plans an annual dividend of ¥22 per share (post-split; ¥220 pre-split) for FY2027, following a 10-for-1 stock split on July 1, which should broaden the retail investor base.
Depreciation totaled ¥10.6 billion (versus ¥10.4 billion a year ago). Capital spending is accelerating, especially for data center-related capacity, making future cash generation a key focus.
Full-Year Outlook
Riding the strong first quarter, management raised its full-year consolidated forecasts for FY2027 to record levels. Revenue is now seen at ¥1,530,000 million (up 17.0% from FY2026), operating profit at ¥123,000 million (up 92.6%), ordinary profit at ¥143,000 million (up 88.5%), and net profit at ¥105,000 million (up 44.8%).
The table below compares the revisions:
| Item | Previous Forecast | Revised Forecast | FY2026 Actual |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | 1,470,000 | 1,530,000 | 1,307,833 |
| Operating Profit | 110,000 | 123,000 | 63,900 |
| Ordinary Profit | 130,000 | 143,000 | 75,800 |
| Net Profit | 95,000 | 105,000 | 72,500 |
The upward revision mainly reflects sustained data center demand in Optical Solutions and Information Components, plus a higher equity-method investment income. Order backlogs remain elevated, leaving ample room for further upside.
Risks and Challenges
While data center demand is expected to stay robust near-term, there is a risk of deceleration after the current investment wave. Volatility in copper prices and exchange rates could significantly impact Metal Solutions earnings, and a sharp yen appreciation would weigh on groupwide results. China's economic slowdown and geopolitical tensions also need watching. Furukawa Electric's diversified segments help mitigate risk, but as its dependence on optical‑related businesses grows, managing technology obsolescence and ensuring timely investment payback become critical challenges.
Analyst take
The first quarter made clear that Furukawa Electric's data center-related businesses have entered a genuine profit-contribution phase. Optical Solutions' surge reflects market recognition of its next-generation fiber technology, positioning it as essential AI-era infrastructure with strong long-term growth prospects. However, the Metal Solutions segment remains hostage to commodity price swings, underscoring the need for portfolio transformation. The stock split signals an effort to attract retail investors. If focused capex continues to lift profitability, the stock's medium-term undervaluation could dissipate.
