KDDI reported a strong start to its fiscal year ending March 2027, with first-quarter revenue rising 5.1% to ¥1,487.3 billion and operating profit surging 21.1% to ¥314.2 billion. Net income attributable to owners of the parent climbed 22.1% to ¥195.4 billion. The results were driven by a new three-segment structure and gains in mobile services, financial operations, and enterprise digital solutions.
Earnings Highlights
KDDI kicked off fiscal 2027 under a new three-segment framework, posting ¥1,487.3 billion in revenue (up 5.1% year on year) and ¥314.2 billion in operating profit (up 21.1%), delivering double-digit profit growth even as the telecom market matures. The top-line increase was fueled by steady mobile service revenue, expansion in financial services and device-related offerings, and surging demand for enterprise digital solutions, notably cybersecurity, AI integration, and data centers. The Business Growth segment, centered on five AI-empowered business areas, generated revenue of ¥165.1 billion, up 11.7%, with adjusted operating profit of ¥18.4 billion (up 21.6%), underscoring its high-growth potential. Companywide, the operating margin improved to 21.1%, a 3.2-percentage-point gain, signaling a clear enhancement in profitability.
Segment Performance
From this quarter, KDDI transitioned to a three-part structure: Telecom Core, Personal Growth, and Business Growth, replacing the previous Personal and Business segments to better clarify the portfolio for investors.
Telecom Core (consumer and enterprise communications) recorded revenue of ¥1,064.6 billion (up 3.4%) and adjusted operating profit of ¥210.7 billion (up 19.5%). The multi-brand strategy of au, UQ, and povo drove mobile revenue higher, while AI-enhanced network quality and operational efficiency lifted the margin to 19.5%, a 2.6-point improvement, reflecting a leaner profit structure.
Personal Growth (finance, energy, device services, Ponta Pass/Lawson, etc.) posted revenue of ¥280.8 billion (up 8.6%) and adjusted operating profit of ¥55.4 billion (up 9.3%). Growth was led by increased loan balances in the financial business, device repair and ancillary services, and higher equity-method income from Lawson, highlighting revenue diversification beyond connectivity.
Business Growth (AI integration, cybersecurity, data centers, etc.) achieved revenue of ¥165.1 billion (up 11.7%) and adjusted operating profit of ¥18.4 billion (up 21.6%). Corporate DX investments sustained high growth in cybersecurity and AI integration, while data centers continued to expand on cloud demand, positioning the segment as a future earnings driver.
(Note: Segment revenue figures are based on external customer sales; operating profit margin is calculated on external revenue.)
| Segment | Revenue | Share | Op. Profit | Op. Margin |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Telecom Core | ¥1.1T | 73% | ¥210.7B | 19.4% |
| Personal Growth | ¥280.8B | 19% | ¥55.5B | 19.8% |
| Business Growth | ¥165.2B | 11% | ¥18.5B | 11.2% |
Financial Position and Capital Policy
Total assets at quarter-end stood at ¥18,854.2 billion, down ¥209.1 billion from the previous year-end, largely due to a reduction in loans and trade receivables in the financial business. Liabilities decreased by ¥262.7 billion, pushing the equity attributable to owners of the parent ratio to 27.2% (up from 26.6%), indicating a stronger capital base. Operating cash flow saw an outflow of ¥113.5 billion, mainly reflecting reduced borrowings in the financial unit. Investing cash flow improved on securities sales, while financing cash flow was affected by increased deposits for share buybacks. The company plans a full-year dividend increase to ¥84 per share (up from ¥80), with an interim dividend of ¥42, underscoring its commitment to shareholder returns.
Risks and Challenges
The quarterly filing states no material changes to the business risks outlined in the prior year’s annual securities report. However, it references an unauthorized access incident in June 2026 involving an ISP mail system that led to an information leak. KDDI is working with the affected ISP to address the matter. Strengthening cybersecurity remains a critical management priority for the telecom carrier.
Full-Year Outlook
KDDI left its consolidated full-year forecasts unchanged from the May announcement: revenue of ¥6,410 billion (up 5.6%), adjusted operating profit of ¥1,210 billion (up 5.0%), and adjusted net income attributable to owners of the parent of ¥731 billion (up 2.7%). These figures are on an adjusted basis, excluding non-recurring items, and may differ slightly from reported profit. Management indicated that the strong first quarter puts the company on track toward its full-year targets.
Strategic Topic: Realignment into Three Segments
The new segment structure, effective this quarter, is designed to present KDDI’s business portfolio more transparently to investors. The strategy uses Telecom Core as a stable earnings foundation, Personal Growth to blend connectivity with adjacent services, and Business Growth to accelerate enterprise DX offerings. Management’s vision of delivering “AI-powered life” extends the core telecom business into surrounding domains, and the pace of execution on this growth strategy will be closely watched.
