Medipal reported Q1 FY2027 revenue of ¥989,503 million, up 4.7% year on year, while operating profit fell 4.7% to ¥13,386 million, as margin erosion in the cosmetics and consumer goods unit outweighed gains in pharmaceutical wholesaling. Net profit surged 42.3% to ¥13,646 million, propelled by a ¥6,061 million gain on the sale of investment securities.
Earnings Highlights
For Q1 FY2027 (April–June 2026), consolidated revenue rose 4.7% year on year to ¥989,503 million, with all segments posting growth. Operating profit, however, declined 4.7% to ¥13,386 million, pressured by a fall in the gross margin (from 6.84% to 6.64%) and a 3.4% increase in SG&A expenses, primarily in the cosmetics and consumer goods segments. Recurring profit slipped 1.7% to ¥17,919 million, while pretax profit jumped 27.0% to ¥23,699 million thanks to a ¥6,061 million gain on securities sales. Net profit attributable to shareholders soared 42.3% to ¥13,646 million. Excluding goodwill amortization and business investment costs, underlying operating profit was ¥14,037 million (-4.2% YoY).
Segment Performance
The Pharmaceutical Wholesaling segment delivered revenue of ¥630,556 million (+5.1% YoY) and operating profit of ¥6,303 million (+13.9%), as demand for innovative drugs and pharmacy channel sales drove growth. While the gross margin dipped 0.23pp due to mix changes, logistics efficiency improvements lifted operating margin from 0.92% to 1.00%. The Cosmetics, Consumer Goods, and OTC Drug Wholesaling segment generated ¥326,927 million in revenue (+3.4%) but saw operating profit fall 19.5% to ¥6,134 million, as higher rebates, personnel costs, and logistics expenses outweighed the benefit of higher selling prices and account wins. Operating margin shrank from 2.41% to 1.88%. The Animal Health and Food Ingredients Wholesaling segment posted revenue of ¥33,094 million (+9.9%) and operating profit of ¥1,071 million (+39.9%), boosted by the inclusion of Signi Co., with margin improving to 3.24%.
| Segment | Revenue | Share | Op. Profit | Op. Margin |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pharmaceutical Wholesaling | ¥630.6B | 64% | ¥6.3B | 1.0% |
| Cosmetics, Consumer Goods, and OTC Drug Wholesaling | ¥326.9B | 33% | ¥6.1B | 1.9% |

Financial Position and Capital Policy
Total assets at quarter-end stood at ¥1,937,423 million, up ¥13,336 million from the prior fiscal year-end, mainly due to higher accounts receivable and inventories. Net assets declined ¥3,683 million to ¥791,716 million, reflecting a decrease in unrealized gains on investment securities. The equity ratio remained healthy at 33.5%. Medipal raised its annual dividend forecast for FY2027 to ¥88 per share (interim ¥44, year-end ¥44), up sharply from ¥66 in the previous year. Although no quarterly cash flow statement was prepared, a key post-quarter event was the execution of a ¥162.7 billion bridge loan from Mizuho Bank in July 2026 to fund the tender offer for PALTAC shares.
Full-Year Outlook
Medipal maintained its full-year guidance for FY2027. The company projects revenue of ¥3,944.0 billion (+3.3% YoY), operating profit of ¥53.5 billion (+0.6%), recurring profit of ¥67.5 billion (-10.9%), and net profit of ¥43.0 billion (+1.1%). The steep decline in recurring profit is largely a reversal from the substantial securities gains recorded in the prior year. EPS is forecast at ¥210.06. Management continues to invest under its mid-term vision, and the planned consolidation of PALTAC may lead to an upward revision once completed.
Strategic Topic: Tender Offer for PALTAC and Group Reorganization
In May 2026, Medipal launched a tender offer for the common shares of PALTAC (TSE Prime, code 8283), which closed on July 7. The acquisition cost was about ¥162.7 billion, and upon settlement, PALTAC will become a wholly owned subsidiary. Medipal already held a majority stake, but full ownership aims to strengthen integration, boost competitiveness in the cosmetics and consumer goods wholesaling business, and maximize group synergies. The full consolidation is expected to push consolidated revenue above ¥4 trillion from FY2027 onward.
Risks and Challenges
Drug pricing reform risk: The expansion of the innovative drug pricing maintenance system is diluting gross margins, and future pricing revisions could have further impact. Declining profitability in cosmetics: Rebate and logistics cost increases, along with persistent consumer frugality, are structurally compressing margins; curbing SG&A and shifting toward higher-value-added products are urgent. Post-M&A integration risk: The full acquisition of PALTAC will bring goodwill amortization and integration costs; delays in synergy realization could heighten earnings pressure. Reliance on investment gains: Current net profit is boosted by special gains; without a strengthening of core earnings, performance variability risks will rise.
Analyst take
Medipal's Q1 showed resilient revenue but a clear degradation in core profitability, especially the 19.5% drop in segment operating profit for cosmetics and consumer goods. The ¥6 billion securities gain flattered the bottom line, so investors should focus on underlying earning power. The aggressive move to fully acquire PALTAC signals a strong commitment to mid-term transformation, while the sharp dividend hike to ¥88 underscores a shareholder-friendly stance. The ¥162.7 billion bridge loan, however, brings financial burden, and post-acquisition goodwill amortization could weigh on earnings. Speed of synergy realization will be the key variable. Investors should closely monitor the cosmetics segment's margin recovery and the progress of PALTAC integration.
