Sangetsu reported a 9.2% increase in first-quarter FY2027 revenue to ¥53.9 billion, with operating profit climbing 34.4% to ¥5.3 billion and net income soaring 71.6% to ¥4.8 billion, driven by strong domestic interior demand and pre-price hike buying. The results marked a record first-quarter profit for the company.
Performance Highlights
Sangetsu delivered a strong start to FY2027, setting a record first-quarter profit. Revenue rose 9.2% year on year to ¥53,937 million, while operating profit surged 34.4% to ¥5,327 million, lifting the operating margin to 9.9%. Ordinary profit grew 40.1% to ¥5,674 million, and net income attributable to parent shareholders jumped 71.6% to ¥4,756 million, boosted by special items (subsidy income of ¥439 million and a gain of ¥415 million on termination of a retirement benefit plan).
Demand benefited from a recovery in new housing starts after a regulatory dip, steady renovation activity, and a rush of orders ahead of a July price revision. On the supply side, the resolution of a fire-related constraint at a supplier led to higher sales volumes of key products. SCM reforms and labor-saving investments helped absorb cost pressures.
Despite the strong Q1, full-year guidance was kept unchanged: revenue of ¥213,000 million (up 3.2% year on year) and operating profit of ¥19,000 million (down 2.1%). Q1 progress was 25.3% for revenue and 28.0% for operating profit; excluding one-off gains, the guidance appears conservative.
Segment Trends
Operations are divided into three segments: Domestic Interior, Domestic Exterior, and Overseas. Domestic Interior, accounting for over 80% of revenue, drove overall growth.
Domestic Interior
Revenue increased 12.7% to ¥43,941 million, with operating profit up 31.0% to ¥5,287 million. All product units grew: Wallcoverings ¥21,750 million (+8.8%), Flooring ¥14,982 million (+17.3%), Fabrics ¥2,517 million (+6.5%), and Other (including design fees and installation) ¥4,691 million (+21.7%). Product development boosted sales, including an expanded fire-safe wallcovering lineup and a new curtain sample book. Recovery from the supplier fire and pre-price hike demand lifted volumes. In supply chain management, improved data integration and demand forecasting streamlined the value chain, while investment in labor-saving logistics and the group logistics company helped offset rising distribution costs. Manufacturing subsidiary Crearete's new Hiroshima plant, which started operations in October 2025, contributed to stable supply.
The spatial design business benefited from a renewed organizational structure and the completion of large-scale projects, building synergies with the interior business.
Domestic Exterior
Revenue slipped 2.7% to ¥1,633 million, and the segment posted an operating loss of ¥28 million (versus a ¥11 million profit a year earlier). The decline reflected a pullback after the previous year's price hike rush. Core unit Sangreen saw higher non-residential and design-build sales, but weak housing demand persisted. The segment is working to expand original products and reduce its reliance on new home construction.
Overseas
Revenue fell 4.1% to ¥8,368 million, but the segment swung to an operating profit of ¥68 million from a loss of ¥86 million. North America (U.S. and Canada) continued to grow both revenue and profit. Southeast Asia improved through region-specific measures, and design-build subsidiary D'Perception Pte Ltd turned profitable thanks to disciplined project management and the absence of prior-year one-time costs. China and Hong Kong remain under pressure from the property slump and weak consumer spending, but losses narrowed on the back of a management overhaul, cost-cutting, and targeted sales strategies.
| Segment | Revenue | Share | Op. Profit | Op. Margin |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Domestic Interior | ¥43.9B | 82% | ¥5.3B | 12.0% |
| Domestic Exterior | ¥1.6B | 3% | ¥-28M | -1.7% |
| Overseas | ¥8.4B | 16% | ¥68M | 0.8% |
Financial Position and Capital Policy
Total assets at quarter-end stood at ¥185,723 million, down ¥3,183 million from the prior fiscal year-end. Cash and deposits decreased by ¥3,662 million to ¥31,752 million, while trade receivables rose. Fixed assets fell by ¥1,087 million to ¥69,798 million, mainly due to a decrease in deferred tax assets. Total liabilities declined by ¥3,193 million to ¥63,453 million; although trade payables increased, decreases in income taxes payable and bonus provisions more than offset them. The equity ratio improved to 65.4% (from 64.3%).
No cash flow statement was disclosed, but the decline in cash suggests operating cash flows were allocated to investments and dividends. The interim and year-end dividends are each planned at ¥77.50, for an annual total of ¥155.00, unchanged from the previous year. The company maintains a stable shareholder return policy considering payout ratio and DOE. No share repurchases were announced.
Risks and Challenges
Key external risks highlighted in the earnings report include:
- Rising energy costs and supply chain disruptions from Middle East tensions
- New U.S. tariff measures and financial market volatility
- Elevated construction costs and rising interest rates in Japan
- Prolonged Chinese real estate downturn
- Structural logistics cost pressures
- Foreign exchange rate fluctuations
Internal challenges involve improving profitability in the Exterior business, achieving full profitability in the China overseas segment, optimizing the entire supply chain, and monitoring post-price hike demand.
Full-Year Outlook
The consolidated forecasts for FY2027, ending March 2027, are unchanged from the May 13, 2026 announcement. Revenue is expected to reach ¥213,000 million (up 3.2% year on year), operating profit ¥19,000 million (down 2.1%), ordinary profit ¥19,200 million (down 4.7%), and net income attributable to parent shareholders ¥13,500 million (down 7.8%). Q1 achievement rates of 25.3% for revenue and 28.0% for operating profit suggest a comfortable start, though the year-on-year profit decline implied by the full-year forecast remains after removing one-off items. The second-half sell-through of price hike products and overseas profit improvement will be decisive.
Medium-term Management Plan and Growth Strategy
In May 2026, Sangetsu formulated the Medium-term Management Plan 2029. Under the vision of “building culture from interiors, starting with materials and design,” the company pursues three key strategies: ① Evolving the Total Interior Core by expanding its product portfolio and strengthening solution proposals; ② Accelerating growth in Overseas interior operations; ③ Cultivating adjacent Space Design and Exterior businesses as mid- to long-term growth pillars.
On sustainability, targets include reducing GHG emissions, promoting resource circulation, and expanding eco-friendly products. In the first quarter, the company introduced recycled curtain products and supported forest conservation. On human capital, it was recognized as an “Excellent Corporation for Cancer Prevention” and continues to focus on employee engagement.
Analyst take
Sangetsu kicked off FY2027 with record first-quarter sales and profits, led by a standout performance in Domestic Interior. Beyond temporary tailwinds like pre-price hike demand and supply recovery, structural gains from SCM reform and product development lifted margins. The Overseas segment’s return to operating profit is encouraging, with North American strength and narrowing losses in China providing a cushion for the rest of the year. While full-year guidance was maintained, Q1’s strong showing, even after stripping out one-off gains, points to potential upside. The Exterior business remains a soft spot, and its success under the new mid-term plan will be closely watched. Overall, the company is making steady progress on its core interior strengths and overseas restructuring.
