Shimadzu Corp. posted Q1 FY2027 revenue of ¥130.6 billion, up 10.3% year-on-year, and operating profit of ¥14.3 billion, a 17.1% jump, both quarterly records. Net income surged 68.3% to ¥13.3 billion, driven by robust semiconductor-related demand and a weaker yen.
Earnings Highlights
Shimadzu’s consolidated first-quarter revenue reached ¥130,596 million, a 10.3% increase year-on-year, while operating profit grew 17.1% to ¥14,264 million. Ordinary profit soared 63.3% to ¥18,486 million, and net profit attributable to owners of the parent jumped 68.3% to ¥13,333 million. All top-line figures represent first-quarter records.
The revenue expansion was underpinned by a 23.2% surge in the Industrial Machinery segment, fueled by turbo molecular pumps for semiconductor manufacturing equipment, and a 23.5% advance in Medical Equipment. The core Analytical & Measuring Instruments segment also contributed a steady 6.0% gain. On the profit side, a ¥3,378 million foreign exchange gain from a weaker yen significantly boosted ordinary profit, masking headwinds such as rising material costs and shipment delays in the Middle East that pressured Analytical & Measuring Instruments’ segment profit, which fell 15.2%.
Under the new medium-term management plan launched from FY2026, Shimadzu is sharpening its focus on high-growth areas like liquid chromatographs and mass spectrometry systems, while expanding recurring revenue from reagents, consumables, and services. These initiatives are already showing traction.
Segment Performance
Shimadzu operates five segments: Analytical & Measuring Instruments, Medical Equipment, Industrial Machinery, Aircraft Equipment, and Other. Total external revenue came to ¥130,596 million, with aggregate segment profit (before goodwill amortization) of ¥15,501 million.
Analytical & Measuring Instruments revenue rose 6.0% to ¥80,300 million, but segment profit contracted 15.2% to ¥7,668 million. Strong demand for liquid chromatographs from pharmaceutical and clinical testing markets, plus mass spectrometry systems for universities and government agencies in Europe and the Americas, was partially offset by shipment delays linked to Middle Eastern geopolitical tensions and higher procurement costs. Overseas revenue accounted for 68.8% of the total, up 0.6 points.
Medical Equipment revenue climbed 23.5% to ¥16,907 million, turning a segment loss a year earlier into a profit of ¥1,114 million. Robust sales of general X-ray systems, fluoroscopy tables, and angiography systems at home and abroad, particularly new product introductions in North America and Europe, combined with improved product mix and higher gross margins, drove the turnaround. Overseas revenue share jumped 11.3 points to 59.9%.
Industrial Machinery delivered a standout performance, with revenue up 23.2% to ¥20,734 million and segment profit soaring 43.5% to ¥3,823 million. Turbo molecular pumps for cutting-edge semiconductor manufacturing, including AI-related demand, led the charge, complemented by solid growth in hydraulic equipment for construction and industrial vehicles. Service demand for turbo pumps in Taiwan and South Korea expanded sharply.
Aircraft Equipment benefited from rising defense-related aircraft components amid Japan’s defense build-up and a recovery in commercial aircraft aftermarket parts. Revenue increased 11.4% to ¥11,031 million, while segment profit rose 33.9% to ¥2,745 million. Overseas sales remained modest at 22.2% of total, with steady North American component shipments.
Other revenue decreased 24.8% to ¥1,621 million, and segment profit dropped 37.7% to ¥149 million, reflecting sluggish performance across miscellaneous businesses.

Financial Condition and Capital Policy
Total assets at quarter-end stood at ¥730,470 million, down ¥7,507 million from the prior fiscal year-end, largely due to a ¥13,683 million decline in cash and deposits from collections of receivables. Investment securities increased by ¥13,088 million and inventories by ¥7,982 million. Liabilities decreased ¥17,503 million to ¥155,370 million, reflecting lower income taxes payable and bonus provisions. Net assets rose ¥9,996 million to ¥575,162 million, supported by higher unrealized gains on available-for-sale securities and retained earnings. The equity ratio improved 2.1 percentage points to 78.7%, highlighting a robust balance sheet.
While the company did not publish a cash flow statement for the quarter, depreciation totaled ¥5,249 million and goodwill amortization ¥229 million, both roughly flat.
Shimadzu plans an interim dividend of ¥27 and a year-end forecast of ¥43, for an annual total of ¥70 per share, a ¥1 increase from the prior year. The projected payout ratio is approximately 34.3% (based on forecast EPS of ¥204.19). The large ¥110 billion debt financing executed after the quarter-end for the Tescan acquisition is not yet reflected on the balance sheet, making its impact on future financials a key focus.
Risks and Challenges
Despite strong near-term momentum, Shimadzu’s financial filing flags several risk factors:
- Geopolitical risks: Prolonged conflict in Ukraine and tensions in the Middle East could disrupt supply chains and demand; shipment delays in India have already materialized this quarter.
- China slowdown: As a major market across all segments, a protracted economic deceleration in China would weigh on performance.
- Currency volatility: While yen weakness lifted profits, a sudden reversal could quickly erode earnings.
- Raw material and component cost inflation: Already impacting margins in Analytical & Measuring Instruments, this may persist.
- Post-merger integration risk: The Tescan acquisition brings significant goodwill and debt; realizing synergies and managing financial load will be critical.
The company aims to navigate these challenges by executing its medium-term plan, capturing semiconductor-related demand, and expanding its recurring-revenue base.
Full-Year Outlook
For the fiscal year ending March 2027, Shimadzu raised its consolidated forecasts across revenue, operating profit, and net profit from the previous May guidance. The upgrade reflects: (1) stronger-than-expected semiconductor market momentum, (2) limited demand distortion from Middle East tensions, (3) persistent yen softness, and (4) the contribution from Tescan Group, consolidated from July 2026.
Comparison with prior forecast:
| Item | Previous Forecast (A) | Revised Forecast (B) | Change (B-A) | FY2026 Actual |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | ¥575.0 bn | ¥620.0 bn | +¥45.0 bn | ¥560.7 bn |
| Operating Profit | ¥76.0 bn | ¥80.0 bn | +¥4.0 bn | ¥73.7 bn |
| Ordinary Profit | ¥75.0 bn | ¥81.0 bn | +¥6.0 bn | ¥82.7 bn |
| Net Profit (attributable to owners) | ¥55.0 bn | ¥59.0 bn | +¥4.0 bn | ¥60.4 bn |
While operating profit is expected to rise 8.5%, net profit implies a 2.5% decline from the prior year, mainly due to the absence of last year’s extraordinary gains. Excluding such items, underlying earning power is strengthening. The company’s preferred metric, operating profit before goodwill amortization, is projected at ¥85.0 billion, up 13.1% year-on-year, underscoring a focus on core competitiveness.
Strategic Topic: Tescan Acquisition Expands Analytical Lineup
On July 10, 2026, shortly after the quarter ended, Shimadzu completed the full acquisition of Czech electron microscope maker Tescan Group a.s. for a total consideration of approximately ¥121.8 billion (USD 751 million), with ¥115.3 billion in cash funded by a ¥110 billion loan from MUFG Bank.
Tescan brings strong capabilities in scanning electron microscopes (SEM) and transmission electron microscopes (TEM), serving materials science, semiconductor, and life science customers in over 80 countries. By adding Tescan’s surface observation and analysis to Shimadzu’s existing strength in component and physical properties analysis, the combined entity can offer a seamlessly broader analytical solutions portfolio. The deal is expected to create substantial goodwill, making post-merger synergy realization and impairment risk management key tasks. The acquisition is positioned as a cornerstone of building a global analytical measurement platform under the new medium-term plan.
Analyst take
Shimadzu’s shift to guiding on operating profit before goodwill amortization makes tactical sense as it gears up for more M&A, with Tescan just the first big step. The yen-driven boost to ordinary profit is a double-edged sword: it masks underlying cost pressures while exposing earnings to sudden reversals. The Medical Equipment segment’s return to the black is a welcome development, but the business remains a fraction of the group total and needs sustained growth to become a meaningful profit driver. The real story is the semiconductor tailwind, yet investors must question how long this cycle can run.
