Earnings Highlights
Sundrug's revenue for the first quarter of fiscal 2027 rose 3.7% year on year to ¥215,331 million, but operating profit fell 1.5% to ¥12,091 million. Ordinary profit declined 2.2% to ¥11,880 million, while net income attributable to owners of the parent increased 0.9% to ¥8,017 million. Revenue was supported by solid pharmacy and e-commerce operations, renovation effects, and temporary demand for daily necessities, but unseasonable weather and softer inbound demand weighed on summer seasonal products. The operating margin narrowed to 5.6% from 5.9% a year earlier, a 0.3 percentage point decline. Net income still posted a modest increase, leaving the quarter with higher sales and net income but a small operating profit decline.

Segment Performance
Drugstore business: segment revenue rose 2.9% to ¥137,114 million, but operating profit declined 3.1% to ¥6,627 million. Rain hurt summer seasonal products and inbound demand weakened, but pharmacy and e-commerce operations remained solid, store renovation effects helped, and temporary demand for daily necessities partly offset the shortfall. Labor cost control kept the operating margin above plan, though it still declined from a year earlier.
Discount store business: segment revenue increased 4.5% to ¥94,046 million, and operating profit grew 0.5% to ¥5,463 million. Steady sales of high-margin products such as confectionery lifted gross profit, while lower-than-assumed cashless settlement fees also supported earnings.
External sales mix: drugstore business 56.3%, discount store business 43.7%. Store count at quarter end: drugstore 1,157 (including 887 directly operated and subsidiaries), discount store 440, total 1,597.

Financial Position and Capital Policy
Total assets fell ¥10,218 million from the prior fiscal year-end to ¥465,286 million, mainly reflecting a decline in cash and deposits. Liabilities decreased ¥10,489 million to ¥179,014 million, due to lower accounts payable and income taxes payable. Net assets rose ¥270 million to ¥286,272 million, lifting the equity ratio to 61.5% from 60.1%, a 1.4 percentage point improvement.
For fiscal 2027, Sundrug plans an annual dividend of ¥132 per share (interim ¥66, year-end ¥66), up ¥1 from ¥131 in the previous fiscal year. No share buyback was announced this quarter. A cash flow statement was not prepared for the first quarter; depreciation totaled ¥4,656 million and goodwill amortization ¥28 million.
Risks and Challenges
The company's main recognized risks include:
- Intensifying competition for new drugstore and discount store locations
- Progress in industry consolidation among large operators
- Competition from other retail formats
- Fluctuations in energy prices and logistics costs
- Unseasonable weather and swings in inbound demand
In the first quarter, weather and weaker inbound demand dampened seasonal product sales in the drugstore business, contributing to lower operating profit. Management also continues to monitor persistent inflation, currency fluctuations, and geopolitical uncertainties including the Middle East situation.

Analyst take
Sundrug's first quarter delivered solid revenue growth, but weaker profit in its core drugstore operations attracted attention. One-off factors like unseasonable weather and softer inbound demand, together with cost pressures from labor and store competition, likely squeezed margins. The discount store segment helped balance the portfolio by expanding profit on high-margin products. Maintaining the full-year forecast signals management's expectation of full-year sales and profit growth, making the pace of recovery in the drugstore segment a key focus. With an equity ratio of 61.5% and a planned dividend increase, shareholder returns are positive, but the medium-term question is how Sundrug will position for growth amid continuing industry realignment.
