TDK reported a 38.3% jump in revenue to ¥741.0 billion for FY2027 Q1, driven by AI data center demand and a weaker yen. Operating profit surged 53.0% to ¥86.3 billion, and net income soared 94.4% to ¥80.5 billion. All five segments grew.
Earnings Highlights
TDK posted consolidated revenue of ¥741,050 million (+38.3% YoY) for the first quarter ended June 30, 2026. Operating profit climbed 53.0% to ¥86,310 million, while net income attributable to owners of the parent surged 94.4% to ¥80,581 million. The strong results were boosted by robust nearline HDD demand for AI data centers, new smartphone product launches, and the yen’s depreciation. Currency effects contributed approximately ¥72.5 billion to revenue and ¥11.3 billion to operating profit. Structural reform gains and cost rationalization also lifted profitability, and all segments delivered revenue growth.
Comprehensive income swung sharply from ¥8,097 million a year earlier to ¥151,284 million, mainly due to foreign currency translation adjustments from the weaker yen. Operating cash flow turned negative at ¥1,915 million, reflecting an increase in trade receivables, but financing activities raised funds through short-term borrowings.
Segment Performance
All five business segments recorded year-on-year revenue growth in the quarter.
- Passive Components: Revenue rose 28.0% to ¥176.8 billion, driven by higher sales of capacitors and inductive devices for industrial equipment and automotive markets. Operating margin improved sharply to 9.8% from 4.6% a year ago.
- Sensor Application Products: Sales increased 33.3% to ¥61.9 billion, fueled by ICT market demand. Operating margin surged to 12.7% from 5.8%.
- Magnetic Application Products: The segment posted the strongest growth, up 49.6% to ¥81.6 billion, thanks to soaring demand for nearline HDD heads and suspensions for AI data centers. Automotive magnets also performed well.
- Energy Application Products: The largest segment (54.8% of total revenue) grew 42.1% to ¥405.8 billion, led by rechargeable batteries (energy devices) for ICT applications. Operating profit rose 25.3% to ¥69.4 billion, though the margin dipped to 17.1% from 19.4%.
- Other: Revenue increased 34.3% to ¥14.9 billion, mainly from mechatronics (manufacturing equipment). The operating loss narrowed to ¥1,832 million from ¥2,476 million a year earlier.
| Segment | Revenue | Share | Op. Profit | Op. Margin |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Passive Components | ¥176.8B | 24% | ¥17.4B | 9.8% |
| Sensor Application Products | ¥61.9B | 8% | ¥7.8B | 12.7% |
| Magnetic Application Products | ¥81.6B | 11% | ¥9.6B | 11.7% |
| Energy Application Products | ¥405.8B | 55% | ¥69.4B | 17.1% |

Financial Position and Capital Policy
As of June 30, 2026, total assets stood at ¥4,751,331 million, up 7.6% from the end of FY2026, driven by increases in tangible fixed assets (¥124.4 billion), trade receivables (¥119.5 billion), and inventories (¥52.8 billion). Liabilities rose 11.2% to ¥2,434,258 million, with higher short-term borrowings and commercial paper. The equity attributable to owners of the parent ratio remained healthy at 48.4%.
Cash flow from operating activities was an outflow of ¥19,154 million, compared with an inflow of ¥59.0 billion a year earlier, mainly due to growing working capital. Investing activities consumed ¥60,220 million, largely for fixed asset acquisitions (¥84,875 million). Financing activities generated ¥85,389 million through increased short-term debt and CP issuance, lifting cash and cash equivalents to ¥870,197 million at quarter-end.
For shareholder returns, TDK plans an annual dividend of ¥40 per share (interim ¥20, year-end ¥20), a ¥4 increase from the prior year, consistent with its target payout ratio of around 35%.
Risks and Challenges
The electronics industry remains exposed to rapid changes, and TDK flagged several risk factors:
- Geopolitical tensions, including in the Middle East, could disrupt supply chains
- Memory demand constraints and price surges may affect smartphone production
- Uncertainty over the sustainability of AI data center investment and the competitive landscape
- Sharp foreign exchange swings, with second-half assumptions of ¥150 per dollar and ¥175 per euro
- The pace of technological change and the success of new product development
- Business cycles in industrial equipment and automotive markets
A stronger-than-expected yen would pressure earnings, while swings in ICT demand could significantly impact the Energy Application Products segment.
Full-Year Outlook
TDK left its FY2027 consolidated forecasts unchanged from the April 28 announcement. The company projects revenue of ¥2,580.0 billion (+3.0% YoY), operating profit of ¥295.0 billion (+8.3%), and net income attributable to owners of the parent of ¥225.0 billion (+15.0%).
| Item | FY2027 Forecast | FY2026 Actual | YoY Change (%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | ¥2,580.0 bn | ¥2,504.8 bn | 3.0 |
| Operating profit | ¥295.0 bn | ¥272.4 bn | 8.3 |
| Profit before tax | ¥300.0 bn | ¥276.8 bn | 8.4 |
| Net income | ¥225.0 bn | ¥195.7 bn | 15.0 |
The company assumes exchange rates of ¥150 per US dollar and ¥175 per euro from the second quarter onward. Capital expenditure and R&D budgets have been increased to lay the groundwork for sustained growth.
R&D and Growth Investment
First-quarter R&D spending rose 20.6% year-on-year to ¥78,047 million, representing 10.5% of revenue. For the full year, TDK plans to invest ¥310.0 billion in R&D (+7.0%), targeting technologies for AI data center components and automotive products. Capital expenditure on fixed assets climbed 40.3% to ¥84,875 million in Q1, with an annual budget of ¥370.0 billion (+23.9%), underscoring the company’s aggressive push into growth areas.
Analyst take
TDK’s Q1 benefited from currency tailwinds and AI-driven investment, but negative operating cash flow is a concern. The increase was driven by higher working capital, and further growth in inventories and receivables could hurt capital efficiency. On the positive side, aggressive R&D and capex spending signal a commitment to long-term competitiveness. Moving toward a less forex-dependent earnings structure and improving margins in the Energy Application Products segment will be key focuses.
