Japan's Six Major Chemicals Groups Q1 FY2027: Profit gains mask uneven returns
Companies compared · 6
Takeaway
Every company grew, but the sources of profit growth diverged.
Japan's six major chemical groups all lifted sales and operating profit in Q1 FY2027, but gains had different drivers. Mitsubishi Chemical led in scale and margin, Mitsui Chemicals in growth, while UBE's net profit fell.
Industry overview
All six companies posted higher sales and operating profit than a year earlier, although the sources of growth varied.
- UBE recorded the highest sales growth, at 21.3%, largely because of its acquired business. Resonac had the lowest increase, at 5.4%.
- Operating profit rose at every company. Mitsui Chemicals posted a 279.8% jump and Sumitomo Chemical a 139.8% increase, reflecting strong recoveries from the previous year.
- Higher feedstock prices, including naphtha, lifted inventory valuation gains at Mitsubishi Chemical and Mitsui Chemicals. These gains could reverse as market conditions change.
- Semiconductor demand also provided support. Companies with strong electronic materials businesses, including Resonac, benefited from growth in advanced materials for AI applications.
- Profitability varied: Mitsubishi Chemical had an operating margin of 11.8%, compared with 4.6% at UBE, reflecting differences in business mix and earnings quality.
All six grew operating profit, but the sources of those gains were not the same.
Sales ranking
Mitsubishi Chemical ranked first in sales, followed by Asahi Kasei. UBE had the fastest sales growth, largely due to its acquired business, so growth rankings tell a different story from company size.
Operating profit ranking
Mitsubishi Chemical led in operating profit. Mitsui Chemicals and Sumitomo Chemical posted faster year-on-year growth, separating scale from the strength of the recovery.
Operating margin ranking
Mitsubishi Chemical had the highest operating margin, more than 7 percentage points above UBE. Business mix and the weighting of high-performance products help explain the gap.
Winner and loser
Mitsubishi Chemical led in scale and profitability. Sales rose 14.0% to ¥1.0042 trillion, while operating profit increased 94.4% to ¥118.4 billion, the highest among the six. Its 11.8% operating margin also exceeded UBE's 4.6%.
Mitsui Chemicals stood out for the pace of its recovery. Operating profit surged 279.8% to ¥48.4 billion, while net profit climbed about 43-fold to ¥32.1 billion. Inventory valuation gains from higher feedstock prices and a low profit base a year earlier amplified the growth rates.
UBE faced the greatest difficulty. Sales rose 21.3% to ¥121.9 billion, and operating profit increased 88.6% to ¥5.6 billion. But net profit fell 3.9% to ¥4.2 billion as a higher tax burden offset the improvement at the operating level.
The largest company and the fastest-growing company showed different strengths. Mitsubishi Chemical led in scale and margin, while Mitsui Chemicals had the strongest recovery momentum.

Strategic moves and company comparisons
The factors behind higher earnings reflected differences in business portfolios and one-off effects.
- Mitsubishi Chemical benefited from semiconductor-related demand as well as inventory valuation gains. It raised its second-quarter earnings forecast.
- Sumitomo Chemical's operating profit rose 139.8% to ¥61.0 billion. Improvement in Essential & Green Materials and higher sales of key products at Sumitomo Pharma contributed.
- Asahi Kasei posted higher sales and profit in every segment. Operating profit increased 51.5% to ¥81.3 billion, with acquisition benefits beginning to emerge in healthcare.
- Resonac was driven by semiconductors and electronic materials. Core operating profit for the half-year was ¥88.7 billion, up 156.5%, and the company raised its full-year forecast.
- Mitsui Chemicals expanded core operating profit in every segment. Inventory valuation gains, fixed-cost reductions and demand for semiconductor materials all provided support.
- UBE benefited from higher sales in its acquired Urethane Systems business. Operating profit rose 88.6%, but net profit fell 3.9% because of the tax burden.
Resonac's figures are for the first half of the year ending December 2026. They are not directly comparable with the other companies' first-quarter results for the year ending March 2027.
Common industry risks
The durability of earnings growth will depend on feedstock markets and the staying power of demand.
- A reversal in inventory gains: Falling raw-material prices could weaken the tailwind for Mitsubishi Chemical and Mitsui Chemicals.
- Market volatility: Deterioration in chemical prices or trading conditions could affect even companies with higher margins.
- Semiconductor demand cycles: AI-related materials are a growth area, but a slowdown in demand could weigh on Resonac and others.
- Post-acquisition integration: Asahi Kasei and UBE need to embed acquisition benefits while managing costs.
- A gap between operating and net profit: As at UBE, higher taxes can prevent operating profit growth from flowing through to net profit.
- Research and development spending also affects earnings at Sumitomo Chemical. The balance between Sumitomo Pharma's growth and investment costs will be a focus.
Rankings and structural trends
Mitsubishi Chemical ranked first in both sales and operating profit, and also led in operating margin. Mitsui Chemicals posted the highest year-on-year operating profit growth, showing how rankings vary by metric.
Asahi Kasei increased profit in every segment, while Resonac stood out for strong growth in semiconductor materials. Even among diversified chemical companies, portfolio choices and the share of high-performance products are increasingly important to earnings power.
What job seekers and career changers should know
Strong results do not shield chemical industry jobs from market conditions or business mix. Comparing Resonac's semiconductor materials, Asahi Kasei's healthcare business and UBE's high-performance urethanes can help clarify the technologies and customers employees may work with.
Earnings also depend on more than research and development: feedstock procurement, pricing negotiations and the management of acquired businesses matter too. When choosing an employer, candidates should look beyond sales scale to the sources of profit and each company's medium- to long-term investment plans.
Sales growth year on year
UBE recorded the fastest sales growth, helped by its acquired business, while Mitsubishi Chemical also benefited from factors including semiconductor demand. Resonac's sales growth was more modest despite strong profit growth.
Net profit growth year on year
Mitsui Chemicals' sharp increase reflected inventory valuation gains and a low profit base a year earlier, so growth rates alone do not show underlying strength. UBE's net profit declined despite higher operating profit, as taxes increased.
