Japan's Passenger Car Makers reported solid revenue growth for FY2026 as Toyota surpassed 50 trillion yen for the first time, but profitability diverged sharply across the sector. Earnings results were largely determined by regional exposure and product portfolios, driven by additional US tariffs, emerging market growth, and massive losses exceeding 1.4 trillion yen from EV strategy overhauls.

US tariffs and EV revisions squeeze profits, rewarding business diversification.
Stationery and office furniture makers diverged in Q2 FY2026, though periods differ: Pilot reported six months, Okamura three. Pilot's sales rose 11.2% and operating profit 17.8%; Okamura's sales fell 1.9%, while profit rose 10%.

Pilot's overseas pen growth met Okamura's lower-sales operating-profit gains.
Consulting and think tank firms posted mixed Q1 FY2027 results: BayCurrent sales jumped 29.9%, while NRI revenue rose 7.5%. Nihon M&A Center's operating profit fell 6.4%, but fund-sale gains lifted net income 33.8%; BayCurrent's fiscal year ends in February, the others in March.

Scale, growth and earnings quality diverged across the three companies.
Shipbuilding and marine engineering peers Namura and Mitsui E&S both grew revenue and operating profit in Q1 FY2027. Mitsui led in scale, but Namura's 22.5% margin topped Mitsui's 11.1% as larger ships and yen weakness lifted earnings.

Mitsui leads in scale; Namura leads in earnings power.
Japan's sports goods makers posted divergent 2026 interim and first-quarter results: ASICS sales rose 32.7% and operating profit 48.5%, while Goldwin's operating profit plunged 82.1%. Shimano's net income surge reflected currency and asset-sale gains, and reporting periods differ.

Brand growth and seasonality split the winners from laggards.
Musical instrument makers Yamaha and Roland reported FY2026 full-year results, for different year-ends. Yamaha's operating profit rose 41.5% as restructuring costs eased, while Roland's record sales came with a 63.7% net-income drop.

Profit recovery favored Yamaha, while Roland delivered higher margins.
Japan's medical distributors Medipal and Ship Healthcare both grew sales in Q1 FY2027, but operating profit fell at both. Ship led in sales growth and margin, while Medipal's 42.3% net profit jump included securities-sale gains.

Sales grew, but core operating profit declined at both companies.
Japan's mid-tier trading houses all posted higher revenue and profit in Q1 FY2027, but growth drivers ranged from resources and chemicals to ICT. Kanematsu led net-profit growth, while Toyota Tsusho remained largest by scale.

Each company's profit growth came from a different business.
Medical Devices and Testing Equipment companies had mixed FY2026 full-year results: Asahi Intecc's sales rose 21.2% and operating profit 50.3%. Sysmex's operating profit fell 40.8% amid China's healthcare curbs, while impairment put Nakanishi in the red.

Earning power, not sales growth, defined the widening gap.
Japan's cosmetics makers Kao and Shiseido both grew sales and profit in the first half of FY2026. Kao posted an 11% operating margin, while Shiseido's operating profit surged 131.8%, underscoring the contrast between Kao's earnings strength and Shiseido's recovery.

Kao led on earnings power, while Shiseido showed the sharper recovery.
OTC and Skin Care Medicines companies diverged in FY2026 interim results: Kobayashi sales rose, but operating profit fell 67.5%. Rohto's Q1 sales and operating profit grew 11.8% and 16.8%, respectively; the reporting periods differ.

Core growth widened the profit gap.
Mid-Tier Drugmakers and Drug Discovery Firms in Q1 FY2027 split between sales growth and earnings gains. Nippon Shinyaku's revenue rose 24.1%, while Ono's operating profit climbed 39.4% despite lower sales; Peptide Dream remained loss-making.

Growth leaders and profit leaders were different companies.
