NS United Q2 FY2027: Profit surge prompts full-year upgrade

NS United posted higher revenue and profit for the six months ended Sept. 30, 2026, as stronger dry-bulk and LPG markets and a weaker yen boosted earnings. It raised its full-year outlook but expects to pay no dividend.

- 4NS United forecasts a ¥0 dividend for FY2027, down from ¥310 in the previous fiscal year.

Headline results
NS United reported revenue of ¥137.1 billion, up 22.9% year on year, operating profit of ¥17.7 billion, up 91.6%, and interim net profit attributable to owners of the parent of ¥14.5 billion, up 31.0%, for the first half of FY2027. Operating profit increased by ¥8.5 billion, while ordinary profit rose 101.3% to ¥17.0 billion.
- Shipping markets: Dry-bulk markets were stronger than a year earlier, supported by steady demand for iron ore, coal, grain and other commodities.
- Longer voyage distances: Rising iron ore shipments from Guinea's Simandou project and increased LPG sourcing from outside the Middle East tightened vessel supply and demand.
- Foreign exchange: The average exchange rate for the six months was ¥160 to the dollar, compared with ¥146.50 a year earlier, supporting earnings.
- Fuel costs: The average fuel oil price rose 29.5% year on year to $681 per tonne. In domestic shipping, higher freight rates did not fully offset the increase.
A first half boosted by overseas shipping markets and the weaker yen. Net profit grew less than operating profit because NS United recorded a ¥4.7 billion gain on vessel sales in the year-earlier period. Gains on sales of fixed assets were only ¥33 million in the current period, making the sharp improvement in operating earnings less visible in the net profit comparison.
Segment performance
Overseas shipping generated revenue of ¥120.0 billion, up 25.6% year on year, and operating profit of ¥15.9 billion, up 119.0%. Cape-size vessels benefited from steady shipments of Brazilian iron ore and West African bauxite, while rising output from the Simandou mine extended voyage distances. In smaller vessels, coal, South American grain and minor bulk cargoes supported markets. For very large gas carriers, longer voyages resulting from increased LPG sourcing outside the Middle East contributed to earnings.
Domestic shipping posted revenue of ¥17.1 billion, up 7.0%, but operating profit fell 12.4% to ¥1.8 billion. Steel-related cargo volumes increased as production at major customers recovered, while the pass-through of higher fuel costs to freight rates also lifted revenue. Cement shipments declined amid weak domestic demand, labor shortages at construction sites and typhoons. Lower utilization of thermal power plants also weighed on power-related cargoes. Profit fell because the business could not absorb the increase in fuel costs.
- Overseas shipping: Accounted for about 90% of consolidated revenue and drove the group's revenue and profit growth.
- Domestic shipping: Made up about 10% of consolidated revenue. LNG transport increased following the completion of an LNG bunkering vessel serving Osaka Bay and the Seto Inland Sea, while LPG transport declined.
The divergence in profit trends between overseas and domestic shipping again highlighted how heavily NS United's results depend on overseas shipping markets.

Full-year outlook
NS United raised its FY2027 earnings forecasts, citing first-half results and its view of market conditions ahead. It lifted its operating profit forecast by ¥5.7 billion, or 21.5%, to ¥32.2 billion, and also raised its revenue and ordinary profit projections.
| Metric | Previous forecast | Revised forecast | Change | Revised forecast, year-on-year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue (¥ million) | 242,000 | 263,000 | +21,000 | +14.5% |
| Operating profit (¥ million) | 26,500 | 32,200 | +5,700 | +56.9% |
| Ordinary profit (¥ million) | 25,300 | 30,700 | +5,400 | +45.9% |
| Net profit attributable to owners of parent (¥ million) | 25,000 | 26,400 | +1,400 | +9.6% |
The company kept its exchange-rate assumption for the third and fourth quarters at ¥155 to the dollar, but raised its fuel oil price assumption from $630 to $800 per tonne. It expects global demand for iron ore, coal, bauxite, grain and other commodities to remain firm, while flagging risks from new vessel deliveries, Chinese crude steel output and geopolitical tensions. It also said markets could soften in the fourth quarter for seasonal reasons. Fuel costs and shipping market swings remain key to earnings even after the forecast upgrade.
Financial position and capital policy
Total assets at the end of the first half were ¥303.2 billion, up ¥6.8 billion from the end of March 2026. The equity ratio rose to 65.2% from 63.2% at the previous fiscal year-end. Cash generated from operating activities was broadly in line with the year-earlier period.
| Item | FY2027 first-half end / first half | Previous year-end / year-earlier period | Comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total assets (¥ million) | 303,154 | 296,361 | +2.3% |
| Equity ratio | 65.2% | 63.2% | +2.0 percentage points |
| Operating cash flow (¥ million) | 20,966 | 21,130 | -0.8% |
| Investing cash flow (¥ million) | -2,683 | 1,552 | Previous period was positive |
| Financing cash flow (¥ million) | -10,156 | -10,917 | Lower outflow |
- Dividend: The interim dividend was ¥0, and the company forecasts no dividend for FY2027. That compares with a full-year dividend of ¥310 in the previous fiscal year.
- Cash and debt: Total liabilities fell ¥3.8 billion from the previous year-end to ¥105.4 billion, partly reflecting a decline in short-term borrowings.
Operating cash flow remained positive at about ¥21.0 billion, while investing cash flow turned negative, including because of vessel acquisitions. A stronger equity base and lower borrowings improved the financial position, but the company is maintaining its previously announced policy of paying no dividend this fiscal year.
Risks and challenges
Despite raising its full-year forecast, NS United cited fluctuations in shipping markets, fuel prices and foreign exchange as factors that could affect results. The company relies heavily on overseas shipping revenue, leaving earnings exposed to shifts in global supply and demand and geopolitical conditions.
- Growth in vessel supply: More newbuild deliveries could loosen vessel supply and demand, weakening dry-bulk and LPG markets and weighing on earnings.
- Chinese crude steel output: Changes in production affect demand for iron ore and other cargoes, influencing the market for Cape-size vessels.
- Geopolitical risk and trade policy: Changes in U.S. trade policy or the situation in the Middle East could alter cargo sourcing, routes and voyage distances, driving market and cost volatility.
- Fuel oil prices: Prices remain high amid tensions in the Middle East, prompting the company to raise its second-half assumption to $800 per tonne. Delays in passing costs on through freight rates would hurt profitability.
- Foreign exchange and seasonality: Exchange rates may move with monetary policy and interest-rate differentials. The company also expects markets could soften in the fourth quarter as cargo flows change seasonally.
In domestic shipping, weak cement and power-related cargo volumes and the inability to fully pass higher fuel costs on through freight rates remain challenges. The pace of market changes and cost pass-through in the second half will be important in assessing whether NS United can meet its upgraded forecast.

Overseas shipping markets and the weaker yen provided a strong tailwind in the first half, driving a sharp increase in operating profit. But the results also underscore how much the shipping business depends on freight rates and supply-demand conditions, making it uncertain whether this level of earnings can be sustained.
One point to watch is that NS United raised its profit forecast substantially while also increasing its fuel oil price assumption and maintaining a zero-dividend outlook. Rather than translating the improvement directly into shareholder returns, the company appears to be prioritizing a buffer against fuel costs and market volatility.
