- Shares to be canceled: All ordinary shares acquired in the buyback
Canceling treasury shares removes them from the share count. The move does not change profit itself, but, all else being equal, it may affect earnings per share and shareholders’ ownership stakes. Investors should distinguish the cash spent on the buyback from the change in the number of shares following cancellation.

The buyback cost nearly all of the ¥50 billion authorized, and Otsuka plans to cancel every share acquired. By reducing shares outstanding, the cancellation could lift earnings per share if profit is unchanged, but it will not improve business performance on its own. Investors should consider the cash outlay alongside the company’s future earnings growth.
